What tail is this?
Thinking of possibly replacing the duck with a tail similar to this:
Does anyone know which tail this is? Here's another shot: Also, how much heavier is this when compared to a f/g ducktail? Thanks for the help.

That is the original whale tail, fit to the pre-intercooler turbos. Definitely the best looking of the whales.

1975 factory carrera tail. Very nice tail, looks even better when you can see down from above and see that it uses the stock engine lid grill.
Cheers

The same tail is listed as the "Fiberglass LTD Rear Spoiler." I'm confused.

As far as I know, there are no replicas of this tail, and the one you posted is not the same thing.
The pre-intercooler ('76/'77) Turbo tail is very similar, except it has a vent in the center at the tail edge of the wing...

What's up, Amir? How've you been? Hey, do you know anyone who sells at least a replica of this tail?

Hey David, not much up with me man, just finishing up this last year of undergrad and then off to bigger and more productive things...
Honestly, I was under the impression that there were no companies making replicas, but a quick look on eBay reveals this little gem (albeit, without the rubber lip): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-911-Engine-Lid-Whale-Tail-Excellent_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ140705QQihZ00 9QQitemZ190056351587QQrdZ1 The unfortunate part about most of the OE ones is that the rubber lip is really beat up on nearly all of them that I've seen pop up here and there. There was a company making replicas of the early Turbo tail I just posted (basically the same thing, just with that vent in the center) in fiberglass with the rubber, but I saw one in person and the quality was pretty poor, dunno if the one on eBay is by the same manufacturer.

Okay, thanks, Amir. Hey man, don't be a stranger. Let's do Willow Springs or a Mulholland run when you (and I) get some free time. Unfortunately, that won't be before Xmas for me.

yes they do I believe at least the rubber that goes around the outside. here are the part numbers: tail base-911.512.043.00, gasket 911.512.215.00, Rubber edge 911.512.019.02. complete Assembly with all fasteners etc. 911.198.380.31.008 dc automotive has a used one thats white including the trunk lid for 1300. but thats pretty steep you can probably find a good used one for less than that

That tail came first on the MY '74 Carrera, all f/g, there was only the single vent in these versions.
Later versions were used on the MY '75 930 w/ a separate vent used either for AC or oil cooling depending on the app. These tails had a separate p/u lip that is NLA last I heard. They are also heavy. The tail referenced in the Pelican catalog is an RSA tail, it bolts to a stock steel lid. no separate lip and they are about as light as you can get. That is what I am using on my C3. The oem RSA tail is the same as the late Carrera tails, again w/ separte p/u lips, again the oems are on the hefty side.

This tail (no extra grills) was also placed on the US only 'Weissach' series of cars in 1980.
So you can look for this tail on: Pre - '78 non-intercooled Turbos '74 - '77 Carreras (and C3's) and the 1980 US only Weissach cars |

A bit more early Turbo tail trivia that I learned about in my hunt for an early ('76-'77) tail.
The factory tails were fiberglass bonded to a steel frame. Someone here on Pelican stated that the secondary opening is larger on the US Turbos than the Euro Turbos to acommodate the hotter running AC equipped engines (I'd like someone to confirm if this is true or not). These tails also had a plastic air defuser that secured the smaller grill to the tail and also guided air directly to the engine fan. Here's are some before/after pics of my "Euro" tail with the smailler opening:

Bill, I was under the impression that the MY 74 Carrera (both US CIS and ROW 911/81 MFI) had f/g ducks bonded to steel lids? I know the 3.0RS used a similar tail.
