Atherton Tablelands World Heritage Area
The Atherton Tablelands is an ancient landscape, shaped by dramatic volcanic eruptions and lava flows. Once it was also a deep ocean basin. Today, it’s a place of waterfalls, crater lakes, rainforest, ancient trees, unique creatures and country towns.
Where Is The Atherton Tablelands? – The Atherton Tablelands is the collective (local) name, for the many townships and regions high in the rainforest mountains, ‘behind’ Cairns. It’s home to the highest town in Queensland – Ravenshoe, which is 920m above sea level.
Welcome To Country – There are several Traditional Owners of the area known as the Atherton Tablelands. The Wadjanbarra Yidi people lived in the low-lying rainforest areas between the mountains, travelling along trails to and from the coast. The Bundabarra Yidi were the custodians of the rainforest mountains in the area around Yungaburra. Our Tablelands tour visits both these areas. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

Driving up the range roads to the highland area known as the Atherton Tablelands, is a scenic adventure in itself, as the roads wind up the mountains and through the rainforest. Up here the weather is cooler. The countryside is a patchwork of farms, townships and rainforest, where secret spots are waiting to be explored. This includes waterfalls, crater lakes and ancient trees, some of which are believed to be over 500 years old. At Cairns Adventure Group, we love the lush green aspect of the southern end of the Atherton Tablelands, and that’s where we take our guests, on adventurous tours of discovery. As a locally owned and family operated business, we know all the best bits and will take you there on our Waterfall Wanderers tour.
Atherton Tablelands destinations we visit on this tour, include what is arguably the prettiest waterfall you ever will see – Millaa Millaa Falls – as well as the ancient Curtain Fig Tree near Yungaburra, and the dairy township of Malanda. Traversing the Tablelands, there’s evidence of the area’s volcanic past everywhere you look. Volcanic cones and craters dot the landscape and at Lake Eacham, you can swim in a crater lake filled with 65m of rainwater.
Our access to the Atherton Tablelands is via the Gilles Range Road and Palmerston Highway, where we stop for a quick look at Crawfords Lookout, to give you a feel for the proportions of the dense rainforest here.
