Victoria Police unveils new uniform
Victoria Police has decided to dump the light blue uniform shirts as part of a revamp of the general duty uniform.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Lucinda Nolan says the project has been driven by police members who wanted a more functional, practical uniform.
She says the new uniform fits better and will be made from a fabric that is cool in summer and warm in winter.
There will be new shirts for women and the functionality of pockets on tactical pants will be improved.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Nolan says the new design is now going out to tender.
"Our move to a darker blue shirt is similar to other Australian states that are also moving to a single colour," Ms Nolan said.
"The block colour of dark navy creates uniformity as everyone looks the same rather than the current situation of several different uniform combinations."
She says there are about 80 different ways the current uniform can be worn.
"By streamlining our uniform we are going to have not only a more consistent and professional look, but also create a uniform that is more functional for our members."
