An American-born architect who designed Australia's federal capital city, Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. In New South Wales, he inspired the Sydney harbourside suburb of Castlecrag. In Melbourne, Victoria, he designed Newman College within the University of Melbourne for the Jesuits. He and his wife, Marion Lucy Mahony Griffin, oversaw the design and construction of some 350 buildings over 28 years and they later came to India where, in 1935, he won a commission to design a library for the University of Lucknow, plus a women's quarter for the Raja of Jahangirabad. He was later selected as architect-planner for the United Provinces' Exhibition of Industry and Agriculture but died of peritonitis on 11 February 1937 at Lucknow. Canberra's famous Lake Burley Griffin is named after him.
