Hanoi Attractions: #23 Bat Trang Pottery Village

The local artisans in the village of Bat Trang has been turning out ceramics and pottery since the 14 century. With the passage of time they have incorporated modern techniques to augment traditional crafts and produce high quality work. This villages gives you the chance to watch come of Vietnam’s finest potters at work and of course you can buy the produce.

The village is located on the banks of the Perfume River, in the Gia Lam District 13 km to the Southeast of Hanoi. It sits adjacent to the historic ports of Thang Long and Pho Hien, meaning that the village has had an important standing in the history of Vietnam.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries a restrictive foreign trade policy made things extremely difficult for Bat Trang Village. It is a miracle that it survives. However in 1986 the government created a much more healthy environment through trade reforms and the village has flourished.

Visitors are able to buy items such as cups, plates, vases, bowls and many other beautifully created products. It makes for an interesting tour.
