PLANT SPOTLIGHT – LILAC VINE/HARDENBERGIA VIOLACEA

Plant lilac vine for its late winter to spring deep purple blooms!

Right now Hardenbergia violacea ‘Happy Wanderer’ is blooming just outside my back door.  This evergreen vine is perfect for its deep purple fountain of color in mid to late winter into spring.

Lilac Vine is suited to our Mediterranean climate: it likes regular moisture during the winter and dry summer conditions.  It is a relatively small for a vine getting about 10-15’ tall but is easy to keep smaller.

Pair Lilac Vine with a Spurge/Euphorbia characias. Euphorbia’s chartreuse flowers look amazing with the purple flowers of the Lilac Vine – they bloom at the same time and have the same water requirements.  If you don’t like Euphorbia (and many people don’t) try Licorice Plant/Helichrysum petiolare ‘Limelight’ instead.

If purple isn’t your thing, there is a white-flowered version -  Hardenbergia violacea ‘Alba.”

Lilac Vine does best with a trellis or fence to twine up and should be pruned back after it finishes flowering to control size and maintain a nice shape.
