Good dad Jason Day says he'll skip the U.S. Open for birth of third child

Every now and again a story like this comes along and I always feel awful writing the same thing: I’m sorry, but if I’m a professional golfer, I’m playing the U.S. Open in this situation.

Maybe it’s because I’m not a dad. I can accept that. But this is the U.S. Open we’re talking about — a chance for history! A chance to bring glory to yourself and your newborn child whose birth you just missed even though you were there for the other two! Just win the U.S. Open and take a sliver of that money to rent a private jet so you can go back and forth. Simples.

But Jason Day isn’t going to take up any of those options — probably for good reason.

The former PGA Championship winner, days removed from his wife’s official announcement that the pair were expecting their third child, told the AP that he’s fully prepared to skip the U.S. Open to be present at the birth of his third child:

“Although I’ve had some good results at the US Open, Ellie and I are really excited about our third child and I want to be there to support her,” Day told AAP.

He continued:

“I’m not missing the birth…If the baby arrives in the lead up, I may be able to get to the US Open in time.”

Jason Day wins all the dad points today.
