Description

A NOVEL APPARATUS FOR DETERMINING THE DIRECTION AND AXIS OF
THE DENTAL IMPLANT DRILLING
Technical Field
This invention relates to an apparatus for determining the direction and axis of the dental implant drilling.
Prior Art
Determination of the drilling direction and axis during the insertion of the dental implants inside the bone tissue formed under the extracted teeth, constitute a technical problem.
There are several techniques used at present to solve this problem. The first and common solution is cutting and opening the gum at the top in the region to which the implant will be applied and reaching the bone tissue, then determining the drilling direction and axis. Since this method comprises the incision (cut) process, this application brings an additional recovery time during the treatment and gives inconvenience to the patient.
Furthermore, a dental implant technique with a computer aided imaging is also used today. In this technique, firstly, 3 dimensional image of the existing teeth in the mouth and the surrounding structure in the form of radiographical representation is taken, then 3 dimensional model image is created by means of the computer software, the dental implant drilling points and angles are determined on the computer screen, by using this information, the holes serving as a guide for drilling is processed on a physical mold and a guiding mold for drilling is created. As an example for this method, US Patent No.
5,725,376 titled " Methods for manufacturing a dental implant drill guide and a dental implant superstructure" may be given.
Also, there are some techniques for determining the implant axis by using computer aided imaging techniques without creating a guiding mold which has holes on it. For example, US Patent No 6,966,772 titled "Method of adjusting a drill bushing for a dental implant" discloses a method for finding the suitable angle for the drilling guide bushing by using tomography and computer aided imaging. Furthermore, guiding structures in the form of adjacent double or triple teeth which have channels inside serving as a guide for drilling are known from US Patent No 5,636,986 titled "Drill guide for dental implants and method".
Computerized methods mentioned above are not generally preferred by dentists, since they are so expensive and they include a time consuming process of preparing a guiding mold.
Due to the disadvantages of existing methods, the need for a novel apparatus that is both easy to use, practical, not expensive, and that does not require opening of gum by cutting, for finding the implant axis is satisfied by this invention.
Summary Of The Invention This invention relates to an apparatus for determining the direction and axis of the dental implant drilling. Said apparatus comprises the following: drilling bit channel, supporting unit, cylindrical connecting rod, an elastic lower layer, an elastic upper layer, six upper hollow magnets, six lower hollow magnets, six metal needles, four to eight metal needles for fixing two connecting parts. Detailed Description of the Invention
With the present invention, an apparatus for determining the direction and axis of the dental implant drilling is provided. The apparatus according to the invention comprises: a drilling bit channel (2) in the form of thin pipe, which can move left and right by means of rubber strings, thus determining the axis of the bone and implant access path, a supporting unit (1), which consists of 2 parts as front and back parts and positioned on top of the dental crest (12) of the gum of the implant region, for allowing the minimum movement of the apparatus to the left or right, cylindrical connecting rod (3) for fixing the drilling bit channel (2) to the supporting unit (1), elastic lower layer (4) with a hole for drilling channel (4a) in the middle, which forms the lower surface of the apparatus, and has an elasticity enabling itself to take shape according to the anatomy of the gum on which it is placed, elastic upper layer (5), which is in two parts, right and left and connected to a ring (11) on the cylindrical connecting rod (3) so as to allow its motion, six upper hollow magnets (6), which have holes in the middle allowing the passage of metal needles (8), of which three of them are positioned on right side and other three on left side on the elastic upper layer (5), six lower hollow magnets (7) which are concentric with the upper hollow magnets (6) and positioned between elastic upper layer (5) and elastic lower layer (4), six metal needles (8) which has a hole at its lower end for passing the rubber string (10) and which transfers the rubber string (10) sequentially through the upper hollow magnet (6), elastic upper layer (5), lower hollow magnet (7), elastic lower layer (4) and gum layer (13) and contacts the upper surface of the bone layer (14), four to eight metal needles for fixing (9) the apparatus inside the mucosa, rubber string (10) for allowing the movement of the drilling bit channel (2) to left or right, two connecting parts (15) positioned at right and left side of the drilling bit channel (2) for allowing the rubber string (10) to move the drilling bit channel (2) to right and left .
Said rubber string consists of 2 parts as right rubber string (10a) and left rubber string (10b) and length of the right rubber string is equal to the length of the left rubber string.
Furthermore, the distance between the metal needles (8) are equal.
The supporting unit (1) of the present invention is made of a non-magnetic metal, preferably aluminium. Furthermore, upper hollow magnets (6) are preferably bigger, namely higher than lower hollow magnets (7). Since upper hollow magnets (6) also serve as a guide for the platinum needles, they should be relatively thicker than lower hollow magnets (7).
Said metal needles (8) which pass through the holes in the center of the magnets and metal needles for fixing all of the apparatus on the gum are preferably made of titanium. However, they can also be produced from other medically suitable metals. Implementation of the system:
First of all, the elastic lower layer (4) is placed on the region to be implanted in such a way that the hole for drilling channel (4a) in the middle corresponds to the dental crest (12) which is the highest hill of the dental gum. Then, supporting unit (1), drilling bit channel (2) and cylindrical connection rod (3)which connects said two part, as a whole, are positioned on the highest part of the dental crest (12), in such a way that lower middle point of the supporting unit (1) corresponds to the highest point of the dental crest. The upper hollow magnets (6) positioned on the elastic upper layer (5) creates a magnetic attraction with the lower hollow magnets (7) positioned on the elastic lower layer (4) and the two part magnetic structure serves as a one-part guide for the metal needle (8).
Rubber string (10) is passed through the holes at lower end of the metal needles (8) and inserted inside beginning from the upper hollow magnet (6). The metal needle (8) with rubber string (10) at its end, passes through the upper hollow magnet (6), elastic upper layer (5), lower hollow magnet (7), elastic lower layer (4), gum layer (13) and reaches the top surface of the bone layer (14). This process is repeated for the 3 metal needles at right and 3 metal needles at left, from outside to inside, if required, looseness of the rubber string (10) is removed, so that rubber string (10) path contacts the bone at three points at right and three points at left.
Since the metal needles (8) which are preferably titanium, in some areas, contact the bone in regions which are closer to the surface and in some areas, contact the bone in regions which are deeper, the rubber string (10) connected to the drilling bit channel (2) will create tension in accordance with the position of the metal needles (8) and thus will enable the movement of the drilling bit channel (2) to right and left. When all the parts in the system works with coordination, the final position of the drilling bit channel (2) is determined and thus the direction of application and axis of the drilling bit is found. This axis will be the true axis of the implant which is decided to be inserted.
