Abstract

An orthodontic appliance consisting of a two-component bracket assembly and a customized wire where the tooth component of the bracket assembly is semi-permanently glued to the tooth surface and the wire component of the bracket assembly is securely attached to the customized wire. The customized wire has a configuration that is derived from characteristics of both the mal-aligned and aligned states of the teeth. The series of wire components of the bracket assembly are separated by an inter-bracket distance and are specifically oriented along the customized wire to form the customized wire-bracket device. When the wire component and the tooth component of the bracket assembly are engaged, the alignment of the teeth occurs due to the elastic recoil of the customized wire. The customized wire-bracket device is completely detachable and re-attachable to the tooth component of the bracket assembly as are the two components of the bracket assembly.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 01 November 2014 (01.1 1.2014)
1. A customized aligner device for aligning at least one mal-aligned teeth of a patient with mal- aligned teeth, each said at least one teeth having a tooth surface, said device comprising:
a customized wire and a plurality of wire components, each said wire component configured to form a detachable bracket assembly comprising a tooth component and a wire component wherein each said wire component is configured to both attach and detach from said tooth component;
each said tooth component configured to be capable of being semi permanently glued to a tooth surface;
each said wire component having a wire slot configured to receive a said customized wire and rigidly hold said customized wire without sliding or rotation of said customized wire in said wire slot of said wire component;
said customized wire having a configuration derived from characteristics of said patient's mal-aligned and aligned state of teeth so that when said customized wire is rigidly attached to a plurality of said wire components, said plurality of said wire components are held in specific positions and orientations, thus forming said customized aligner device;
said customized wire and said plurality of wire components further having a
configuration so that when each said wire component of said customized aligner device is attached to a plurality of corresponding tooth components that have been semi permanently glued to said tooth surfaces of said mal-aligned teeth, said customized aligner device then recoils and deflects to align said at least one mal-aligned teeth; and
wherein said customized aligner device is configured to be one piece detachable from said plurality of tooth components, and re-attachable when needed.
2. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the position and orientation of a plurality of wire components on said customized wire is determined by a plurality of inter-bracket distances between each wire component of said plurality of brackets.
3. The device as described in claim 2 wherein misalignment and alignment of said teeth of said patient are defined by a physical or electronic model for at least one present or desired future alignment of said patient's mal-aligned teeth; and
wherein each of said plurality of inter-bracket distances between said each wire component in said plurality of wire components is a length of said customized wire between adjacent wire components in said physical or electronic model of said patient's mal-aligned teeth for said at least one desired alignment
4. The device as described in claim 3 wherein if a given inter-bracket distance between said wire components in said physical or electronic models of a desired future alignment of said patient's mal-aligned teeth is smaller than said given inter-bracket distance between said wire components in said physical or electronic models of a present alignment of said patient's mal-aligned teeth, then said customized wire between said wire components of said brackets is further configured to comprise at least one of curves, loops and bends in said customized wire, such that the distance between said wire components is reduced when said customized wire is in passive state.
5. The device as set forth in claim 3 wherein said plurality of said wire components have different orientations; and
wherein said different orientations are configured to achieve a desired aligned teeth arrangement when attached to a plurality of said tooth components.
6. The device as described in claim 5 wherein orientation of each of said plurality of said wire components on said customized wire is determined by orientation of each of said tooth components and said wire components on teeth from said physical or electronic model of a desired future alignment;
wherein said customized wire is further configured to further comprise multi-dimensional bends;
said multi-dimensional bends configured to transfer said orientation to each of said plurality of said wire components.
7. The device as described in claim 5 wherein orientation of each of said plurality of said wire components on said customized wire is configured to correspond to the orientation of each of said plurality of tooth components and wire components on the respective teeth on said physical or electronic model of desired aligned arrangement with over-corrected positions for mal-aligned teeth.
8. The device as described in claim 5 wherein said orientation of said plurality of said wire components on said customized wire is a set of predefined values.
9. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein at least some of said plurality of tooth components are configured to be capable of being attached to at least one of a labial or lingual tooth surface.
10. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said customized wire comprises at least one of multi-dimensional bends, curves, or twists configured to achieve a future desired aligned teeth arrangement.
11. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said customized wire has a square, rectangular, or circular cross section.
12. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said customized wire is securely attached to said plurality of said wire components with at least one of mechanical interlocking, adhesive, chemical bonding, laser welding or similar procedures.
13. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said wire component further comprise hooks to engage inter-maxillary elastics used to correct inter jaw relationships.
14. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said customized wire is fabricated from plastic, polymers, metals, metal alloys, shape memory polymers, rubbers or a combination of these.
15. The device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said plurality of said wire components and said plurality of tooth components are fabricated from plastic, polymers, metals, metal alloys, shape memory materials or a combination of these.
16. A method of producing a customized aligner device for aligning at least one mal-aligned teeth of a patient with mal-aligned teeth, each said at least one teeth having a tooth surface; said device comprising a customized wire and a plurality of wire components, each said wire component configured to form a detachable bracket assembly comprising a tooth component and a wire component wherein each said wire component is configured to both attach and detach from said tooth component;
each said tooth component configured to be capable of being semi permanently glued to a tooth surface;
each said wire component having a wire slot configured to receive said customized wire and rigidly hold said customized wire without sliding or rotation of said customized wire in said wire slot of said wire component;
said customized wire having a configuration derived from characteristics of said patient's mal-aligned teeth so that when said customized wire is rigidly attached to a plurality of said wire components, said plurality of said wire components are held in specific positions and
orientations, thus forming said customized aligner device;
said customized wire and said plurality of said wire components further having a configuration so that when each said wire component of said customized aligner device is attached to a plurality of corresponding tooth components that have been semi permanently glued to said tooth surfaces of said mal-aligned teeth, said customized aligner device then recoils and deflects to align said at least one mal-aligned teeth; and
