Abstract

反射型偏光素子としての機能を発現するとともに、製造が比較的簡易であり、素子の強度の面でも問題がなく、さらに、偏光素子を透過した後の光の強度と進行方向とを維持することのできる偏光素子を提供する。また、この偏光素子を用いることにより、光の利用効率が高められた液晶表示装置を提供する。具体的には、面内に光学軸を有する略一軸性のシートの表面に、特定の角度を有する多角形状の複数のプリズムを構成し、当該シートの進相軸方向の屈折率と略同一の屈折率を有する光学透明樹脂層により当該プリズムを被覆した素子とする。
