Description
AIR EXTRACTION SYSTEM
The present invention relates to an air extraction system, particularly, though not exclusively, for installation in public houses and similar establishments.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for extracting air from a room to the exterior, the apparatus comprising a first fan adapted to draw air into the apparatus from the room through a firεt air inlet, duct means for removing said air to the exterior, a smoke detector operatively connected to said first fan to switch the first fan on upon activation of the smoke detector, a second fan adapted to recirculate air through a second air inlet/outlet and means for dispensing fragrance and/or deodoriser into said recirculating air.
Preferably, the second fan is adapted to run continuously, whereas the first fan only runs when the smoke detector is activated.
Conveniently, the fragrance/deodoriser is supplied in liquid, solid or gel form in one or two containers held within the apparatus, adjacent or close to said second air inlet/outlet. These containers are preferably large enough to last for approximately twelve months based on continuous twenty four hour operation, and are readily exchanged for new ones when empty.
Preferably, the whole system is mains powered, the first fan being relatively high powered, driven by an EBM motor, and the second fan being much less powerful.
The air which is ducted from the room is replaced naturally from windows, doors, air vents and similar.
The combination of continuous fragrancing/deodorising and
extraction of smoky air as required results in a healthier, more pleasant environment with a minimum of trouble and noise from the operation of the extraction system. Once powered on, the system can be left on twenty four hours a day.
Preferably, the first and second air inlets include grills comprising double deflectors, the deflectors of the first air inlet being inclined oppositely to the deflectors of the second air inlet/outlet, thus effectively separating the air into two airstreams - one going through the first fan and the duct, and the other being recirculated by the second fan.
Conveniently, both fans and the smoke detector are contained within a rectangular box-shaped housing, the main body of which would be located above the ceiling of the room, passing through a hole specially made for the purpose. The housing would be fitted within this hole in such a manner that the air inlet grills are substantially flush with the ceiling.
Preferably, the housing is divided into two compartments - a first compartment containing the first fan and a second compartment containing the second fan and the fragrance/deodoriser containers.
The smoke alarm can conveniently be fitted within the divide between the two compartments, with the sensor element of the detector protruding slightly below the level of the grills.
The ducting can conveniently be taken through a suitable hole in the wall, or between the ceiling joists.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a partially cut-away vertical section through the apparatus,
Figure 2 is a schematic showing how the housing is secured to the ceiling,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the apparatus from beneath, and
Figure 4 illustrates the electrical connections to the smoke detector and first fan.
Referring to the drawings, apparatus 10 according to the present invention comprises a rectangular box shaped housing 12 having a hole 12 in one of the short sides, and including a facia incorporating two separate grills 24, 26. A smoke detector 28 is positioned between the two grills, the body of the smoke detector being contained within the housing 12.
The grill 24 defines a first air inlet to a fan 16 driven by an EBM motor 18, and the grill 26 defines a second air inlet/outlet to a second fan 20, which may conveniently be a computer cooling fan. The sole purpose of fan 20, which is designed to run continuously all the time the apparatus is powered on, is to draw air in through grill 26, pass it over canisters 22 of fragrance/deodoriser, and push it out again through the same grill 26, thus re-circulating the air.
The output of the smoke detector 28 is electrically connected to the motor 18 of the fan 16, so that the fan 16 only operates when the detector 28 is activated. A light 30 indicates when the detector 28 is activated.
Ducting 14 is connected to hole 12a via a bulkhead fitting, for the purpose of carrying away stale air drawn into the apparatus via fan 16.
The installation is simple - a hole is cut into the ceiling of the room, and the housing 12 is pushed up into the ceiling void through the hole, until the grills 24, 26 are flush with the ceiling. Battens 13 are then used to bolt the housing 12 to
the edge of the hole in the ceiling, the main body of the housing 12 being accommodated between the ceiling beams 14.
Once inserted through the hole in the ceiling, most of the rest of the installation can be carried out from above. This involves installing the ducting 14 through a convenient hole or space to the exterior, and making the electrical connections.
Once the system is switched on at the mains, the apparatus is left powered on, the fan 16 running intermittently as required, and the fan 20 running continuously, fragrancing and/or deodorising the air.
As can be seen from Figure 4, the smoke detector 28 is connected to a 0-18 volts DC electrical supply, and the output of the smoke detector 28 is fed to an electrical relay 32 operating at 240 volts AC. This in turn activates a fan contactor 34 operating at 240 volts AC, which switches on the first fan 16. The smoke detector output for clean air is 0 volts, with smoke triggering an output of between 6 and 12 volts, 300 mA
