Specification Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1900.
Application filed June 11, 1908. Serial No. 487,914.
To all whom t-may concern:
Be. it known that I, Bnivxo Mans'rsnnsa, manufacturer, citizen of Germany, residi at Munich, Bavaria, Germany, have invent certain new and useful Im rovements in Border-Pieces for Travelingrunks; and I- do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tionof the invention,
' such'as willenable ot ers skilled in the art 10 to which it appertains to make and use the same. The present invention relates to metal bdrder-pieeee for traveling trunks or the V a an fitting like, which form in section two grooves with hi h sides, inverted relative to each other the one into the other. According to this invention, the grooved filler-pieces are arranged on the closing es 0 that even in the case of manufactured trunks or of trunks made of material liable to shrink, a permanent and burglar-proof joint will be ins Reference being had to the accompanyin drawing, Figure 1 shows a trunk fitted wit suchborder-pieoes in section, Figs. 2 and 3 being sections of the border-pieces on a lar er scale, of which Fig. 3 showsa slightly in form of construction.
Thwe borderieces, which may be made of any suitable d of sheet-metal, possess two opposed grooves with high sides, fitting into or with each other. The u per piece 0 presents a eonvexjace while t e ower border piece (a) is the'fornmt two adjoining yes of which the-lower groove, formetf gdih dingflangeb is adapted to receive an inclose the 11 per edge of the body of the trunk and the ot er j to receive the edge of the lid. In this manner a rigid connection of the trunk body and lid is insured when the trunk is closed. Further, 'the' fact that the com aratively long sides 'of the two grooves wi always act as springs, makes these border-pieces es ially suitable for manufactured trunks, since the wood or other material of the trunk need not lit r uiteexactl into said grooves, but may be left somew at thicker; in this manner allowance can also be made for a possible shrinking of the wood The groove (f) with its high sides It and i also makes it impossible to insert a bar-or border piece (a the trunk and lid in such a mannerv other tool between the body and lid of the trunk, whereby the trunk is made burglarproof.
The tightness of the joint can further be increased by lining the groove (f), or the lid-edge if), or both, with some soft material, suc as for instance, velvet.
The sides (I) may also be let into the sides of the trunk so that no projecting parts are left, which latter are often the ,starting- POlIllZ Ol' cause of breakages and damage to the trunk.
On the outer side (b) of the lower borderpiece (a) a rojection 0) may bearran upon whichthe rim d) of the upper order-piece (Ei 2) wi 1 rest when the lid is closed, where y an additional tightening of the joint is secured.
In order to attain a tight joint, the upper border-piece may also be provided on one or both sides with rojections g), (Fi 3), which, when the d is closed own, wi I rest on the upper edges of the sides (1') and (It) of the lower borderiece. This projection (9} may be formed 111 any suitable manner.
t wi l be obvious that the here described border-pieces may be equally well applied to travelingsbags or other receptaclw, and the term trunk is used in a generic sense to include such. 1
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
