UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES EDWARD HARRISON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUFFLER OR PROTECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES EDWARD HAR- RIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mufflers or Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawing in which i Figure 1 is a face view of a muffler embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a section along line as so of the same. Fig. 3 is a section along line y y of the same. Fig. 4 is a crosssection on the line 4 4, Fig. 1.
This muffler is essentially used by chauffeurs and such persons who areexposed to severe weather. The muffler is provided with pockets which serve as receptacles for a number of articles such as veiling or handkerchiefs and a pair of ear muffs.
In this drawing the letter a designates a neck muffler which has tabs 1) at its neck portion with snap buttons whereby the muffler when in use can be looped and attached to the hanger of a coat. The muffler is also provided with a series of safety pins 0 so that the flap portions thereof can be attached to the inner portion of said coat. The inner edges of the flaps of the muffler are slitted from near the bottom to within a short dis tance of the neck portion thus forming openings or mouths to pockets (Z in the muffler. The slits or openings are adapted to be closed by means of snap buttons 6 like glove fastoners. The pockets are adapted to 0011- tain veiling or handkerchiefs and a pair of ear muffs f which are fastened to the interior of the pockets. When the muffs f are in use they can be drawn out of the pockets and being attached to the pockets by means of elastics can be stretched to the proper position on the ears.
The handkerchiefs or veils can be secured to the interior of the pockets by means of small safety pins or fastenings 9 so that when they get soiled they can be removed from the ockets and cleaned. In Fig. 1 the dotted ines show the protectors drawn out of their Specification of Letters Patent.

pockets and in this position they serve to protect and cover the chest and neck.
When the muffler is worn by a female the pockets will contain veils and when they are drawn out of the pockets utilized to cover and rotect the face and neck. A pair of gogg es can also be placed in the pockets. Both of the tabs 1) are sewed or fastened to the neck portion of the muffler and each tab has a free end, one of the tabs having a socket member, and the other a stud member, the free ends of the tabs being looped around the hanger of the coat and secured by snapping the stud member into the socket member.
What I claim is 1. A muffler or protector comprising a neck portion and flap members provided with pockets and having handkerchiefs adapted to form supplemental protectors secured in the pockets.
2. A mufller or protector comprising a neck portion and flap members provided with pockets and having handkerchiefs adapted to form supplemental protectors secured in the pockets, said pockets having their mouth portions provided with closing means.
3. A muffler or protector comprising a neck portion and flap members rovided with pockets and having hand erchiefs adapted to form supplemental protectors secured in the pockets, at the inner edges to allow the remaining portion of the handkerchief to be drawn out to serve as a veil or covering for part of the wearer.
4. A mufller or rotector comprising a neck portion and ap members rovided with pockets and having hand erchiefs adapted to form supplemental protectors secured in the pockets said muffler having tabs with attaching device adapted to engage the hanger or other part of an outergarment.
5. A muffler or protector comprising a neck portion and flap members rovided with pockets and having hand erchiefs adapted to form supplemental protectors secured in the pockets and means for securing the flap portions to a garment.
6. A muffler or protector comprising a In testimony whereof I have hereunto set neck portion and flap members provided my hand in the presence of two subscrib- With pockets and having handkerchiefs ing Witnesses.
