Description

"N0. 866,696. PATENTED SEPT. 24, 1907.
W. F. TAYLOR.
PACKING.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6, 1907.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FRANK TAYLOR, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHARLESTON METALLIC PACKING COMPANY, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
PACKING. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed March 6,1907. Serial No. 360,922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANK TAYLOR, a resident of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of- South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention relates to improvements in packing, the object of the invention being to provide an improved packing especially designed for use as a gasket packing for manholes and handhole plates for boilers, or for other steam and gas or air tight packings, and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction'and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section and Fig. 3 is a view in cross section.
1 represents a soft metal tube constituting a core around which a tape of duck or other insulating material is wound and contains adhesive rubber cement or other like material to hold the duck on the tube. I An asbestos cloth 3, through which is woven a fine wire net work 4, is then wound over the tape 2, to bring the packing up to the desired diameter and is held in place by any desired adhesive. The packing'thus formed, is then cut into desired lengths, the cuts being made at an angle, sothat when the length is curved into gasket form the ends will fit together and overlap each other, permitting them to be firmly held together by a binding tape wound around the meeting ends, and a short coupling wire 5 is inserted in the ends of tube 1 to hold the gasket in proper formation. It will thus be seen that the packing may be formed in lengths and cut the desired size for any size of gasket and when in use will absolutely prevent escape of steam, gas, air, etc.
-A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise-details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully describe'd my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
1. A packing comprising a metal core, a tape wound thereon and cemented thereto, and asbestos cloth wound over the tape and cemented thereto.
2. A packing, comprising a metal tube, a duck tape wound on the tube and asbestos cloth wound over the duck tape.
3. A packing, comprising a soft metal tube, a duck tape wound on the tube, and asbestos cloth containing a net work of. wire, wound on said duck tape.
4. A gasket, comprising a packing composed of a soft metal tube, packing material wound on the tube and the ends cut diagonally and brought together, a wire coupling in the ends of the tube, and adhesive tape wound around the meeting ends of the packing.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. FRANK TAYLOR.
Witnesses J. P. THOMAS, J. G. BARKLEY.
