Specification of Letters Patent.

To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in tools particularly adapted for use as fencetools.
' The main object of the invention is the production of a tool of the plier type, with the use of which the Wire or wires of the fence may be stretched, out, and spliced.
The invention in the preferred form and details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the gripping member of the tool. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the clamping member of the tool.
Referring particularly to the drawings, my improved tool comprises two members, a gripping member 1 and a clamping member 2, said members being pivotally connected to provide a tool of the plier type.
The gripping member 1 comprises a handle-section 3 of desirable sectional contour and suitable length for the class of tool desired. From the forward end of the handlesection projects a disk 4, arranged offset from the longitudinal plane of the handle-section and formed in one edge with a cutting-recess 5, the side walls of which recess are at direct right angles to the plane of the disk, as is usual in devices of this type. The disk is centrally formed with the opening 6 to receive the pivot-pin of the members, as hereinafter noted. From the edge of the disk in a plane below the connection of the handle thereto projects the gripping-section of the member, comprising arms 7 and 8, extending from said disk in slightly-divergent relation,
. so that the free ends of the arms are spaced apart a sufiicient distance to permit the insertion of any ordinary gage of wire. The arm 7 is of approximately triangular shape in crosssection, the apex 9 thereof projecting toward the arm 8. The arm 8 is preferably rectangular in cross-section, with the upper surface 10 thereof forming an anvil for the cooperation of the aw of the clampingmember.
The clamping member comprises a handlesection 11 identical with the handle 3 of the gripping member, though reversely disposed, as is usual in tools of this type. From the forward end of the handle-section 11 projects a disk 12, offset from the central longitudinal plane of the handle and formed in its edge with a recess 13, arranged to cooperate with the recess 5 in the movement of the handles.
From the edge of the disk in the plane above the handle 11 is arranged an arm or jaw 14, preferably rectangular in section and formed on its lower surface to cooperate with and bear throughout upon the anvil 10 of the arm 8 of the gripping member. The disk 12 is centrally formed with the opening 15 arranged when the parts are assembled to register with the openings 6 in the gripping memher to provide for the reception of a pivotpin 16. It is of course understood that the disks are offset from the respective handlesections in reverse directions, so that when the members are assembled the handles are in alinement, while the disks are side by side in contact. The arms 7, 8, and 14 are of greater thickness than the respective disks and disposed in relation to said disks in accordance with the projections of the handles therefrom, so that said arms are equal in transverse extent with the width of the handles and are of course disposed in alinement. Immediately in rear of the disk each handle-section is formed with a transverselyarranged notch 17, forming an opening for the reception of one end of the wire in the splicing operation, as hereinafter described. In the closed position of the handles the recesses 5 and 13 are out of registry, so that a utilization of said recesses for cutting the Wire or the like requires that the handles be separated to an extent .to cause said recesses to register to provide an opening in which the article to be cut is inserted, whereupon the closing operation of the handles will force the angular edges of said recesses past each other with the usual shearing effect.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A tool comprising movable members and including three arms projecting in the same relative direction from the members, two of said arms being arranged for independent movement and adapted for cooperation for clamping an article, and a third arm having a relative fixed relation with one of the first-mentioned arms and being spaced therefrom to provide for wedging an article arranged between them, said members being each provided with a notch designed to register in opverging to provide for wedging an article between them, and a clamping member having movable connection with the gripping member and provided with an arm arranged for clamping cooperation with one of the arms of the gripping member, said member and clamping member being each formed with a notch designed to register when said members are in operative relation.

A tool of the plier type comprising handle-sections and three arms projecting therefrom, two of the arms projecting from one section in relatively fixed gradually divergent relation to provide for wedging an article between them, the third arm projecting from the other section to overlie and contact throughout its length with one of the arms of the other section, each of said handle members being formed with a notch designed to register when the sections are in cooperative relation.
4. A tool of the plier type comprising handle-sections, divergently-spaced arms projecting from one of the handle-sections, one of said arms being of triangular shape in crosssection, and a jaw projecting from the remaining handle-section, said jaw being arranged to cooperate with one of the arms for clamping purposes, each of the handle-sections being formed with a transversely-arranged recess to register when the sections are in operative position.
