MACHINE FOR BENDING IRON-A-FLAT AND ANGLE.
SPECXFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No.4 699,858, dated May 13, 1902.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM VOLLMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Iron-Flat and Angle-of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for bending irone-lat and angle; and it has for its object to provide an improved machine of this class whereby flat and angle iron may be readily bent into the required form.
The invention has for its particular object to provide an improved device of this class which will be relatively simple in construction, positive in operation, and generally superior in point of efficiency and serviceability;

machine is provided with a bed-plate 1, which is supported upon suitable standards, as at 2, and upon which is mounted a former 3, about which the iron is bent by means of an operating-arm 4. The stock (illustrated at 5) is i fed into position to be bent between the arm 4 and the former 3 in vertical position about the bed-plate 1 by any suitable means, lmanually or otherwise, and means 6 are provided for advancing the former 3 into operative position and retracting the same from operative The operative contour 7 of the former 3 is adapted to the class of Work to be performed, and to this end a plurality of diversiiied formers may be provided of varying operative contour to permit of bending the iron into any desired shape. The operatingarm 4in the construction illustrated is mounted to swing above the bed-plate in a horizontal plane and the stock to be bent is fed horizontally over the bed-plate and between the former 3 and a guide-block 8, which is spaced slightly from the former and at the rear end of which, as at 9, the operating-arm 4is mounted.
In the preferred form of construction the operating-arm 4 is provided at its inner end with vertical bearings or gudgeons 10, which are respectively journaled in the bed-plate 1 and in a cap-plate ll, secured to the top of the guide-block S. The vertical edge portion 12 at the innerrend of the operating-arm 4 is convexly curved, as illustrated, to it a vertical cavity, as at 13, formed in the guideblock S, whereby the operating-arm is capable of oscillation in close engagement with the guide-block and imparts a true bend to the stock at the line of angular divergence between the operative or inner face 14 of the guide-block 8 and the corresponding face 15 of the operating-arm. The guide-block 8 is firmly bolted to the bed-plate, as at 16, to insure a rigid relation of the parts in the bending operation.
Thelformer 3 may consist of a solid block 17 of metal or other rigid material, and the same is provided with a depending foot 18, which projects through an elongated slot 19 in the bed-plate 1 and is thereby guided in its adjustment over the bed-plate to advance or retract the same into or out of operative v position, and said elongated slot 19 is ar- Referring to the drawings, my improved ranged to guide the block 17 in a path of movement obliquely across the bed-plate or toward or from the line of angular divergence between the operative faces 14 and 15, respectively, of the former and the operatingarm. The means for advancing and retracting the former 3 may consist of a cam 20, mounted upon a shaft 2l and operatively connected with the block 17 by means of a link arm 22, which is connected with the block 17 of the former 3, as at 23, and is provided at its rear end with a strap 24, which encir cles the cam 20. The link arm 22 may extend above the bed-plate 1 in alinement with the elongated slot 19, and the cam-shaft 21 is suitably journaled, as at 25. The block 17, which constitutes the former 3, may be provided beneath the bed-plate with a foot-plate 2G, which extends in facial engagement with the under surface of the bed-plate and is connected with the foot 18,which projects through the elongated slot 19. The cam-shaft21 may be provided with a suitable crank 27 for manipulating the cam to advance or retract the former 3 into or from operative position. I may also employ a supplemental operating- ICO arm 28 for use particularlyin bending angleiron, which will lap over the former 3 in the bending operation, and said supplemental operating-arm 28 in the preferred form of 5 construction is pivoted to the block 17, at the top of the same, as at 29, and embodies a broad operative surface portion 29a, arranged to bear upon the angle-iron, and a handle portion 30, which is capable of depression upon the guide-block 8 in operation. The employment of the supplemental operating-arm 28 prevents buckling of the angleiron and causes an even bend of the same.
The operation and advantages of my improved machine for bendingiron will be readlly understood. The iron is fed above the bed-plate in vertical position between the former 3 and the guide-block 8, and the projecting end of the same is bent around the 2o operative face of the former 3 into the shape and to the degree determined by the form of the forme-r 3. The former is retracted from operative position by the means 6 to permit of feeding the stock into position between the guide-block and the former 3 and advanced into operative position by the same means previous to the bending of the iron. The supplemental operating-arm 2S is employed in connection with the bending of angle-iron, the handle portion of the same being depressed simultaneously with the depression of the main operating-arm 4.
The entire machine is relatively simple in construction and positive in operation and can be employed in a wide variety of usages similar to that described.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arran gement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variation and modifica'- tion may be made in the features ot' construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the deviceto various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve lthe right to all such variation and modication as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of vthe following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-f v1. An improved bending-machine of the class described,lcomprising a bedplate,a main operating-arm arranged to swing above the surface of the bed-plate, a former mounted upon the bed-plate, means for moving the former into and out of operative position with respect to the operating-arm, a guide between which and the former the stock is fed above the bed-plate into position for bending, and a supplemental operating-arm which is operated simultaneously with the main operatingarm to maintain the stock in proper condition during the bending operation.
2. An improved bending-machine of the class described,comprisin g a bedplate,a guid e mounted upon the bed-plate, a main operating-arm pivoted above the bed-plate, a former mounted upon the bed-plate, means for moving the former into and out of operative position With respect to the guide and the operating-arm, anda supplemental operating-arm pivoted to the former and arranged to be de- -presscd upon the stock during the bending operation.
3. An improved bending-machine of the class described,comprisingabed=plate,aguide mounted thereon, an operating-arm seated in a cavity formed in the guide and pivted above the bed-plate whereby the arm is in close engagement with the guide, a former mounted upon the bed-plate, and means for moving the former into and out of operative position with respect to the guide and arm.

An improved bending-machine of the class described ,comprisin gabedplate,a guide mounted thereon and provided with a recess having its Wall curved, an operating-arm having a rounded end fit-ting in said recess and pivoted in said bed-plate, a former mounted on said bed-plate, and means for moving said former into and out of operative position with respect to the guide and arm;
5. An improved bending-machine of the class described,comprising a bedplate,a guide mounted thereon and provided with a recess having a curved wall, a cap-,plate secured to said guide and extending over said recess, an operating-arm having a rounded end t; ting in said recess and pivoted in said bedplate and said cap-plate, a former movably mounted on said bed-plate, and means for moving said former into and out of operative position with respect to the guide and arm.
