PISTOL FOR SQUIRTING LIQUIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 61 7,495, dated January 10, 1899.
. residing at Nimptsch, (Si1esia,) in the Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pistols for Squirting Liquids, of which the following is a' specification.
My invention relates to a pistol shaped'de- Vice or instrument for squirting out liquids to be used principally by cyclists to ward off dogs or highway robbers. The handle of the pistol is hollowed out and holds incloseda hollow rubber ball, such as is used, for instance, on atomizers. An air-inlet valve is provided at the lower end of said ball. The triggenwhich is pulled in the usual manner, carries at the end, reaching into the hollow of the handle, a plate, on which is fastened a spring for ordinarily pulling it down to its lowest position. If the trigger is actuated by the finger pulling the finger-ring backward, the said plate is pressed upward and against the rubber ball, the latter is compressed, and part of the air contained in it is forced out at the front end, which is in connection with the barrel. This latter, running out into a point with a very small opening in it, contains the liquid to be squirted out, preferably a solution of sal-ammoniac. The air being forced out of the rubber ball now with considerable force drives the liquid out of the small opening in the shape of a thin jet. In order to prevent the liquid from entering into the rubber ball, means are provided whereby the rubber tube connecting the rubber ball with the barrel is ordinarily compressed and is only allowed to distend during the intentional discharge of air into the barrel.
In order to make my invention more read ily understood, I have illustrated it on the accompanying sheet of drawings, of which Figure 1 shows avertical and longitudinal view of the pistol, partly in section. Fig. 2 shows the mechanism during the discharge period.

As long as the trigger is not pulled the arm 0 will take the position shown in Fig. 1, the head 01. firmly pressing the lower wall of the connecting-tube against the upper one, and thereby preventing any passage of air from the rubber ball to the barrel; but as soon as the trigger is pulled the arm 0 swings around and downward, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the lower wall of the connecting-tube can distend to its normal shape, when part of the compressed air may pass from the rubber ball through the tube d into the barrel.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pistol-shaped instrument for squirting out liquids the combination of the hollow handle a, containing the rubber ball I) having an air-inlet valve 0, the trigger it provided with plate and spring Z, the pointed barrel f, the plug g, and a connecting-tube d between the said ball and the barrel, as and for 85 the purpose specified.
2. In a pistol-shaped instrument for squirting out liquids the combination of the hollow handle a, containing the rubber ball I) having an air-inlet valve 0, the trigger h provided with plate is for compressing the rubber ball and trigger-spring Z, the arm 0 projecting from the trigger and carrying the head 12, the connecting-tube d, the piece q for depressing the upper Wall of the said connecting-tube, the plug 9 and the pointed barrel f, as and for the purpose specified.
