Description

(No Model.\
G. A. KOLLENBERG.
RIM TURNER.
No. 359,263. Patent-ed Mar. 15, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. KOLLENBERG, OF OWENSBOROUGH, KENTUCKY.
RIM-TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,263. dated March 1 5, 1887.
Application filed October 13, 1886. Serial No. 216,126.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. KOLLEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensborough, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rim-Turners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to rim-turning devices to be applied to any edging or burring machine in common use and to form the rim or wire into the desired circle simultaneously with the edging or burring. Heretofore spe cial machines had to be constructed for edging and forming the rim.
Almost every sheet-metal-working shop is provided with an edging or burring machine,
and it is the object of my invention to devisea simple and economical device that can be readily applied to such machines for turning the rim-into such sized circles as may be required.
The improvements consist in the novel features, more fully hereinafterset forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings,in which Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of an edgingmachine of ordinary construction having my attachment applied. Fig. 2 is a side view of a portion of the same, on an enlarged scale, showing the attachment adjusted to various positions. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 00 ac of Fig. 3.
The attachment consists, essentially, of the clamp A, of any approved form, and the rim or flange B, projecting laterally from the side thereof. The rim is curved, preferably on the arc of a circle, and may form an integral part of the clamp, or be separate and adjustably connected therewith, as desired. In the latter construction a side. of the clamp will be provided with a curved groove, a, to receive the inner edge of the rim B, which latter has a depending flange, B, resting against the side (No model.)
of the clamp and provided with curved slots b, through which and a side of the clamp pass bolts b, which hold the rim in any adjusted position, for the purpose presently to be made known.
It will be understood that the clamps will be made rights and lefts, to suit the different burring and edging machines in the market, which are made rights and lefts, and will be provided with any suitable means for securing it to the frame thereof, the set-screw a shown being the most common.
In practice the attachment is designed to be applied and secured to an edging-machine at a point nearly opposite the adjacent faces of the edgingroll, so that the rim B will lie in the plane of said rolls and engage with the rim passing between them and form it into the desired circle. The size of the circle may be regulated by adjusting the inclination of the clamp, which will give the desired pitch to the rim B; or the clamp may remain fixed and the rim B be adjusted relative to the clamp, in the manner previously set forth. Either or both of these adjustments may be used, as found most convenient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A rim-turning attachment for edging or burring machines, consisting of a clamp to embrace a portion ofthe frame of the machine, having a rim or flange formed on the arc ofa circle projecting laterally therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the clamp having a curved groove in its side, of the curved rim having one edge fitted in said groove and provided with a depending flange fitted against the side of the clamp and having curved slots, and the bolts passed through said slots and the clamp for holding the rim to the clamp in any adjusted position. substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. GEORGE A. KOLLEN BERG.
