Description

W. H. PEIRGE 82: J. A. RUSSELL;
DENTAL PLATE.
No. 321,847. Patented July '7, 1885.
Ihsrrnn Srarns WILLIAM H. PEIRCE AND JOSEPH A. RUSSELL, OF CENTREVILLE, MICHIGAN.
DENTAL PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,8 t7, dated July '7, 1885.
Application filed May 15, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, XVILLIAM H. Pnrnon and J OSEPH A. RUssELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Centreville, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany ingdrawings.
Our invention relates to dental plates; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of a perfumed strip of material therein, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of our invention is to construct a dental plate which is provided with a perfumed strip of material secured either in the suction-cavity or on one or both sides of the plate nearest the roof of the mouth.
Another object of our invention is to so construct a dental plate with a perfumed strip of material secured therein that fetid breaths, which at times are so offensive to others, may be sweetened and purified by coming in contact with the perfumed material in the plate.
W'e attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate simi lar parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dental plate, showing a perfumed strip situated in the suction-cavity. Fig. 2 is a section on line XX of Fig. 1, showing a covering over a perfumed strip. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improved dental plate, showing the perfumed strip to one side of the suction-cavity.
A represents an ordinary form of dental plate having a suction-cavity, B. As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, a small strip of suitable perfumed or medicated material, as O, is placed in the suction-cavity B. This strip 0 is held in place by small cross-bars O 0, said cross-bars being suitably secured in the sides of the cavity 13. As shown in Fig. 2, a thin covering, D, of rubber or other suitable material is placed over the cavity, to keep the metal bars from coming in direct contact with the roof of the mouth; but in ordinary cases the plate at this point never touches the roof of the mouth, and the covering may be dispensed with. When this covering is used, it may be perforated or not, as may be desired,
being fastened to the plate in any well known manner.
As illustrated in Fig. 3, the perfumed material is placed on either side of the suctioncavity, being situated in suitable recesses formed in the plate at these points, the strip secured in the same manner as when it is situated in the suction-cavity. The strip of material to be used for this purpose can be made of any suitable absorbent, and may be per fumed, medicated, or saturated with a disinfecting compound as a preventive against infectious diseases.
The cross-bars used to hold the strip or sachet in place may be constructed of noncorrosive metal, so that the mouth will not become sore or fostered by coming in contact therewith.
It is obvious that the cavity for the reception of the perfumed strip may be placed in any positiomothcr than those shown and described wiih as equal efficiency and certainty in its results.
Many changes in the form, thickness, and shape of the pad may be substituted for that shown and illustrated without departing from the nature and principle of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination'with a dental plate, one or more strips of absorbent material for holding perfumed or medicated substances, situated in a recess or in recesses formed in the plate, and means for securing said strips in place, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a dental plate, one or more strips of absorbent material for holding perfumed or medicated substances, situated in a recess or in recesses formed in the plate, cross-bars for holding the said strip or strips in position, and a suitable covering for the said strip or strips, and cross-bars constructed as may be desired, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM H. PEIRGE. JOSEPH A. RUSSELL.
