Description

P 8, 1964 R. SEIGFORD 3,147,651
HAND TOOL. TUBING BENDER Filed Oct. 18, 1962 Robert .Seigf ord INVENTOR.
V BY w United States Patent 3,147,651 HAND TOOL TUBING BENDER Robert Seigford, 5101 4th St., Marrero, La. Filed Oct. 18, 1962, er. No. 234,573 1 Claim. (Cl. 81-15) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tubing benders and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a tool of this character which is portable and which, further, comprises a novel construction whereby tubing of various metals, particularly copper, may be precision bent by hand with a minimum of eflort.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a portable tubing bender of the character described Which comprises a single piece of suitable metal.
Other objects of this invention are to provide a hand tool of the aforementioned character which is of relatively simple construction, strong and durable, compact, of light weight and Which may be produced at reasonable cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a tubing bender constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view, showing the tool in use; and
FIGURE 3 is an end elevational view of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a sheave 4 of suitable metal. The sheave 4, which may also be of any desired dimensions, is engageable circumferentially with the tubing to be bent, as indicated at 5 in FIGURE 2 of the drawing.
Formed integrally with one of the side flanges 6 of the sheave 4 and extending radially therefrom is an operating handle or lever 7. In the embodiment shown, the lever 7 tapers toward its outer or free end.
Formed integrally with one of the longitudinal edges of the lever 7, adjacent the sheave 4, is an inwardly laterally extending hook 8. The hook 8 is engageable with the tubing 5 for operatively connecting the lever 7 thereto.
It is believed that the use of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the sheave 4 is engaged with the tubing 5 at the point at which the bend is to be made with the hook 8 engaged behind said tubing. The lever 7 is then swung counterclockwise as viewed in FIGURE 2 of the drawing for bending the tubing 5 to the desired degree in an obvious manner. The construction of the device is such that it may readily be carried in a pocket or a conventional tool box. Of course, the radius of the bend is governed by the diameter of the sheave 4.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A hand tool tubing bender consisting of a sheave and an operating handle, said sheave including a central circumferential tube receiving groove defined by a pair of circular edge flanges, said operating handle being rigid with one flange and projecting radially therefrom in the same plane as said one flange, said handle including an inner face and an outer face, said inner face being completely fiat and coplanar with the inner surface of said one flange, and a tube retaining hook, said hook being rigidly mounted on said handle at a point located outwardly from said one flange and inwardly from the remote end of said handle, said hook projecting from said one fiange to at least the plane of the other flange.
