(Ci. 128--283) This invention relates to ileostomy or colostomy devices, and more particularly, concerns drainage bags.

Drainage bags or receivers for ileostomies and the like, are provided and held in place against the body of the wearer by means of belts, straps, adhesive tape or the like. Furthermore, an opening in such bag or receiver is sealed about the stoma opening by adhesive patches or discs.

However, as such bags must be regularly removed and reused after washing, or replaced when using the discardable type of bag; resealing the opening in the bag takes place in the same area of the body of the wearer, giving rise to skin irritations, discomfort and trauma. While pressure sensitive adhesives are used in such re sealing operations, nevertheless, repeated peeling of the adhesive patches or discs from sensitive body areas gives rise to skin irritations of varying degrees of intensity.

Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide improved adhesive means for sealing drainage bags or containers to the body of a wearer, wherein successive reattachment of said bags takes place in respect to successively different body areas, thereby avoiding skin irritation and discomfort.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved adhesive member attachable to ileostomy or colostomy bags such member having an adhesive layer with different areas thereof adapted to be successively exposed for securement to corresponding different areas of the body of the wearer of such bags.

A further object of this invention is to provide improved adhesive means for reusable or single use, discardable types of drainage bags, such adhesive means having a sectionalized protective covering overlying the same, whereby different sections of such covering may be independently removed to expose different selected areas of the adhesive, thereby allowing sealing of the bag to the body of the wearer at different areas thereof upon removal and replacement of the bag at successive intervals.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention herein essentially comprises adhesive means for sealing a drainage bag to the body of the wearer thereof in a manner permitting the sealing operations to take place with respect to different body areas upon successive removal and reattachment of such bag at intervals, thereby avoiding undue irritation and discomfort encountered when such rescaling operations took place with respect to the same or substantially the same body areas.

Thus, referring to the drawing, and particularly to FIGS. 14, designates a novel adhesive member em- 3,681,771 Patented Mar. 19, 1963 bodying the invention, for sealing a drainage bag, generally indicated at 11, to the body of a wearer of such bag, to provide drainage means for ileostomies or the like.

Bag 11 is of conventional design, being either reusable "after washing, or of the single use, discardable type.

Such bag 11 is formed of thin plastic film such as polyethylene, vinyl copolymer or the like, and comprises

12, 13 sealed together at their peripheral edges. Bag 11 may include an integral loop portion 14 along the top edge thereof for receiving a belt indicated at 15 whereby the bag may be supported on the body of the wearer, in a manner known in the art.

Bag wall 12 is formed at its upper end with the usual stoma opening 16. The adhesive member 10 is adapted to seal the opening 16 about the stoma of the wearer. Such member 1% comprises a disc shaped member 17 having a central opening 18. Member 17 is coated on its opposite surfaces with

The covering 21 is in unitary, annular form, and when adhesive member 16 is to be affixed to bag 11, covering 21 is peeled away to expose adhesive layer 19. 23, 24 and 25; said sections being of annular shape with their adjacent peripheral edges in abutment, thereby initially completely covering adhesive layer 21 When bag 11 is to be applied to the body of the wearer, one of the annular covering sections, say, section 25, is peeled away, thereby exposing a restricted, annular area 28 of adhesive layer 21 The bag 11 is then pressed against the body of the wearer, the stoma passing through registering

16, 18. Thus, the bag 11 has its wall 12 sealed to the body of the wearer by way of the annular area of adhesive 28.

Such bag 11 may later be removed from the body of the wearer for washing, if it is of the reusable type and is then ready to be resealed in place. At this time, covering section 24 is peeled away to expose a restricted, annular area 27 of adhesive layer 26, for rescaling bag 11 in place but in respect to a different body area from that previously contacted by adhesive area 28. Similarly, upon further removal and reattachment of bag 11 to the body of the wearer, the third covering section 23 is peeled away to expose a corresponding adhesive area 26 of adhesive layer 211, which in turn will adhere to still another area of the body of the wearer.

It will be apparent, that with successive exposure of different adhesive areas for attaching bag 11 to the body of the wearer, different body areas will be contacted by the corresponding adhesive areas, thereby avoiding undue skin irritation and discomfort which arises when the same body area is subjected to repeated removal and re sealing of the bag 11 thereto.

It is understood that member 11) is of such dimensions as to afford individual

It is understood that adhesive members 19 having multisectional, removable covering

Here again, as each bag is successively rescaled to the body of the wearer, a different cover section is removed to expose different adhesive areas and thereby changing the body areas to which the adhesive is applied.

As various changes might be made in the embodiments of the invention herein disclosed without departing from the spirit thereof, it is understood that all matter herein shown or described is illustrative and not limiting except as set forth in the appended claims.

What is claimed. is:

1. In a drainage bag for ileostomies and the like, said beg including a wall having an opening therein, adhesive means for securing the wall portion about said opening to the body of a wearer, said adhesive means comprising an adhesive coating ,on a given surface portion of said wall about said opening and removable sheet protective means covering the entire adhesive coating, said sheet protective means comprising a plurality of separate sections, each protective sheet section being independently removable to uncover a limited area of said total adhesive coating for securing said bag wall portion only to a corresponding limited area of the body of the wearer while leaving other areas of said adhesive coating covered by retained protective sheet sections in unattached relation to correspending opposed areas of the body of the wearer different from said first mentioned limited area, whereby successive removal and replacement of said drainage bag will allow for adhesion thereof to different limited areas of the body of said wearer.

2. A drainage bag as in claim 1 wherein said protective sheet sections are of annular form.

3. A drainage bag as in claim 1 wherein said protective sheet sections are in the form of strips extending radially outward from the bag opening.

4. A drainage bag as in claim 1 wherein said adhesive means comprises an annular disc adhesively secured to said bag wall portion with the opening of said disc in registry with the opening in said bag wall portion, said adhesive coating being on the outer surface of said disc.

5. An adhesive member for securing a drainage bag to the body of a wearer, said member comprising an annular disc, a first layer of pressure sensitive adhesive on one face of said disc, a removable protective covering over said first layer of adhesive, a second layer of pressure sensitive adhesive on the other face of said disc, 21 removable protective multi-section covering over said second layer of adhesive, said first mentioned protective covering being removable to allow securement of said disc by the uncovered first layer of adhesive to a wall portion of said bag with the opening in said disc in registry with an opening in said bag wall portion, a single section of said multi-section covering being removable to expose a limited portion of said second adhesive layer to secure said bag to a corresponding limited surface area of the body of the wearer while leaving other limited portions of said second adhesive layer covered by retained protective covering sections in unattached relation to corresponding opposed surface areas of the body of the wearer different from said first mentioned limited body surface area, and another section of said multi-section covering being thereafter removable to expose a different limited portion of said second adhesive layer to secure said bag to a corresponding limited surface area of the body of the wearer different from the first mentioned limited surface area of the body of the wearer, whereby successive removal and replacement of said drainage bag will allow for adhesion of said bag to different limited surface areas of the body of the wearer.

6. An adhesive member as in claim 5 wherein said covering sections are of annular form disposed at successively spaced radial intervals with respect to the open ing in said disc.

7. An adhesive member as in claim 5 wherein said covering sections are of strip form extending radially from the opening in said disc to the peripheral edge thereof.

Claims

1. IN A DRAINAGE BAG FOR ILEOSTOMIES AND THE LIKE, SAID BEG INCLUDING A WALL HAVING AN OPENING THEREIN, ADHESIVE MEANS FOR SECURING THE WALL PORTION ABOUT SAID OPENING TO THE BODY OF A WEARER, SAID ADHESIVE MEANS COMPRISING AN ADHESIVE COATING ON A GIVEN SURFACE PORTION OF SAID WALL ABOUT SAID OPENING AND REMOVABLE SHEET PROTECTIVE MEANS COVERING THE ENTIRE ADHESIVE COATING, SAID SHEET PROTECTIVE MEANS COMPRISING A PLURALITY OF SEPARATE SECTIONS, EACH PROTECTIVE SHEET SECTION BEING INDEPENDENTLY REMOVABLE TO UNCOVER A LIMITED AREA OF SAID TOTAL ADHESIVE COATING FOR SECURING SAID BAG WALL PORTION ONLY TO A CORRESPONDING LIMITED AREA OF THE BODY OF THE WEARER WHILE LEAVING OTHER AREAS OF SAID ADHESIVE COATING COVERED BY RETAINED PROTECTIVE SHEET SECTIONS IN UNATTACHED RELATION TO CORRESPONDING OPPOSED AREAS OF THE BODY OF THE WEARER DIFFERENT FROM SAID FIRST MENTIONED LIMITED AREA, WHEREBY SUCCESSIVE REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF SAID DRAINAGE BAG WILL ALLOW FOR ADHESION THEREOF TO DIFFERENT LIMITED AREAS OF THE BODY OF SAID WEARER.
