Figure 6 is an elevation of the device shown in Figure 5, with parts in section. v v The invention comprises a substanially rectan- 'gular, vertically arranged frame A formed of vertical I-beams I at each end having reinforcing plates 2 welded to the sides thereof. These vertical beams l are joined at their upper and lower ends by horizontally extending parallel cross bars 3, 3a, which are secured by bolts to theouter and inner faces, respectively, of the vertical members I. These cross plates have adjustment holes 4 spaced along their length for a purpose which will hereinafter be described.
The clamping and bending mechanism is composed of two similar sections, so theifollowing description of one section thereof will suflice to explain the construction and operation of the machine. 1 y 7 Attached to each vertical beam 1., between the bars 3, 3a, and extending in opposite directions, are a pair of power units comprising hydraulic 23 Claims. These cylinders are welded to the frame .as shownat 6. A connecting rod 1 extends from thecylinder and is joined by a pivotal connection including-a c1evis-8 and a pin 9 to the bending arms C of :the clamping and bendingsection. The 'bendingarms of each section comprise diverging I--.bearns H), :H, reinforced in :a manner heretofore described in connection-with themem- -Abe-r lywhich are joined together as shownat the cylinder :end by welding or otherwise. At their other ends these diverging arms are welded or otherwise secured-at spaced points to-the clamping members and clamping collars. The-clamping members :I) are :formed *of :a pair of opposed, short, semi-circular rpipe sections 1 2, l 3., having-1a .radiusco-rresponding substantially to that .of the mipeor other material to be bent. Each end of each pipe :section l2, 13 is reinforced by lradially extending rib-like, semi-circular clamping collar segments [4, 1.5, the corresponding pairs of which are laterally slightly offset from one another so'a's to permit their meeting faces'to overlap at one end 'as at IS in Figure '4. These overlapping faces are bored to receive 'a bolt or pintle 11 which passes through the clamping collars of each section and functions as a hinge member about which the clamping means pivots whenopened to receive a pipe or other object to be bent. The opposite ends of these clamping collars terminate short of each other to provide a 'space'E, as'best shown in Figure 4, which is straddled by the latch fastening and tightening means. This means includes a pin l8 secured to the collar I5, an eyebolt I9 being pivoted on the pin. The bolt l9 engages a U-shaped ear 20 on the opposite collar and by means of the nut I the two collar segments are drawn together to grip the material to be bent.
An inner clamping member 2| is arranged between the two outer clamping members and is cut away for a portion of its circumference as at F, in Figure 2, to permit contracting of the metal being bent along the inner curve of the bend, the opposite face of the collar at G serving to control and guide the metal being stretched at the outer curve of the bend.
The entire bending and clamping apparatus is supported by a rig from the tractor B and is suspended from the boom line of the rig by a series of cables or rods 22 which are welded or otherwise joined to the apparatus at spaced points as shown so as to support said apparatus in a balanced manner for lowering onto the work to be bent.
In operation, the apparatus is maneuvered into position over the work to be bent, or the work may be brought to the machine, as expedience dictates, and the clamping members are held open with the latching means disengaged. As the sections I2,- l3, with their integral collars are dropped over the work to be bent, the latch mechanism is engaged and drawn tight by screwing nut 1901. against ear 20. With the apparatus thus in position, the hydraulic unit' (not shown) on the tractor is actuated to supply power to the hydraulic cylinders 5, 5a. The action of the cylinder forces the bending arms in opposite directions, the pivotal connection at 8, 9, Figure 6, permitting the bending arms to swing in an arcuate path, thereby causing the ends of the work to be brought together, forming a bend between the clamping sections. As the degree of bending angle is governed by the length of the connecting rod attached to the piston, where a short rod is used, only a short bend may be made. To permit successive bends on the work until the desired angle is obtained, the cross bars 3, 3a are provided with adjustment holes 4 by means of which the vertical beams I may be moved along the cross bars and secured in adjusted position by bolts or pins passing through tions, said means including a pair of arms joined together at the power unit and diverging outwardly therefrom, work clamping means secured at spaced points to said arms, said means comprising opposedgripping sections for gripping the work, a reinforcing collar segment at each end of each section, the corresponding collars of each pair being offset laterally from one another said adjustment holes, whereupon the bending operation heretofore described may be repeated.
' It will be obvious that both power cylindersthereof, and it is to be understood that changes in design and construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims. t
I claim as my invention:

A machine for bending pipe and the like comprising a supporting framework, a pair of power units mounted on said framework, a bendingarm secured to and actuated by each of said power units, Work clamping means on said bend-'- ing arms, said means comprising opposed pipe sections, areinforcing ccllar segment at each end ofeach section, the corresponding collars of each pair being offset laterally from one another with the side, meeting faces thereof overwith the side faces thereof overlapping each other at one end, a bolt passing through said overlapping portions of each segment to serve as a pintle therefor, andmeans'at the opposite ends of said segments for latching them together about the 'work.
3. A machine forbending pipe comprising a frame, said frame comprising a. pair of spaced vertical bars connected by a pair of spaced cross bars, a power unit connected to each of said vertical bars, a reciprocating member actuated by each of said power units, bending arms pivotally connected to each of said members, means on said bending arms for clamping said arms to the pipe being bent, whereby movement of said reciprocating members operates to bend said pipe at apoint between said pipe clamping means and means for adjusting said vertical bars to spaced points along the cross bars.
