Application February 7, 1947,, SerialNo. 726;994
(erasea *4 Claims. 1
This invention-relates to new and useful improvements inwheel flange lubricators of which "the follb'ewing" is a specification.
The primary object-oi this invention resides in the-provision of a lubricating device which retain's altar of lubricant in contactwith the flange of-a-locomotive wheel until said lubricant is con-- sumed wherein the device "is conveniently removed, cleaned andrefilledwith additional lubricant.
Another object of this "invention: is the'provision of "a lubricator as set forth which applies lubricant to only the flange of the wheel and eliminates the-possibility of the tread of the wheel becoming lubricated. and causing slippage and loss in efliciency as often occurs with use of liquid lubricants;
Another and still further obi'ect'of this invention is the provision of a zlubricaztor for wheel flanges which is effective and reliable in use and affords-great conveniences in the application of bar lubricants.
Still'anotherobjectof this invention residesin the provisionof a lubricator of the character described which is of a simple, durable; and extremelyinexpensive design and construction.
Still further improvements and advantages of this invention will readily appear to those skilled in the art when the following description is read in the light of the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the assembled lubricator.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section taken on line 4-4 of Fi 1.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings which illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention and in which like numerals indicate similar parts throughout A designates an elongated cylindrical housing open at both ends thereof and provided with external threads I for a spaced distance inward one end thereof.
An internally threaded cap plug 2 is provided with an extended boss 3 in the center thereof in which is slidably retained an elongated shaft 4 provided at one end with a circular plate 5 adapted to slide within said housing, when said plug is secured about the threaded end thereof, and a curved hollow housing 6 is formed at the second r A "second circular plate 1, of the same size as plateS; providedwith a curved flange 8 thereon is adapted to receive one end of a coil spring 9 about the curved flange in a snap fit, and said plateisf'reely inserted into the open end of the cylinder A spring first so that the second end of the spring '9" abuts with the plate '5.
A bar lubricant H), such as graphite or the like, of the same diameter as the cylinder A is slidably inserted'thereinto to abut with the plate 1; and: is normally retained in an extended posi- "tion therefrom by the resilience of the coil spring 9'.
The cylinder A is provided with an eye hook I l extending from one side thereof intermediate its length, and anextended ear [2 diametrically opposite, both of said' projections being disposed beneath'one of'the two open mouths of the curved housing 6. A link chain I3 is secured in the eye hook "l l and passes upwardly through the curved housing 6 and outwardly through the second mouth thereof to a position adjacent the ear 12 where it is adapted to be removably secured in a "slot 1'4 therein by sliding one link of the chain into the slot which is prevented from movement by the adjacent links thus locking the chain in "said position and retaining the sliding rod 4 against extension from the plug cap beyond the limit of the chain setting. Thus a means for controlling the distance of the position of plate 5 within the cylinder is provided and thereby a selectively operated control for the feeding of the lubricant from the cylinder is also provided.
An enlarged split cylinder B adapted to be selectively slidably positioned on the cylinder A and secured in place by ears l5 provided on either side of the split which are selectively tightened by a threaded stud l6 interconnecting said cars.
This cylinder B carries an extension arm 0 which is provided with means for securing said cylinder and lubricator in place in a proper position adjacent the flange of a wheel.
It may be readily seen that the cylinder B is slidable along the length of the cylinder A to facilitate the positioning of the lubricator in its proper position, and that the lubricant bar ID will feed automatically through the open end of the cylinder A against the flange under the resilient force of the spring 9, and also that the tension of the spring may be increased with a decrease in the length of the lubricant bar by taking up on the chain l3 and forcing the shaft 4 inward the cylinder A. 7
Having thus described and explained this invention and with full belief that modifications in size, materials and general characteristics would not constitute departure from the spirit of this invention what I desire to claim in Letters Patent is:
1. A wheel flange lubricator of the character described comprising, an elongated cylindrical casing threaded at one end, a cap plug threadedly secured about the threaded end of said casing, an extended hollow boss formed on said cap, an elongated shaft slidably mounted in said boss, a circular plate carried by the inner end of said shaft and adapted to slide within said casing, a coil spring carried in said casing in abutment with said plate, a bar lubricant slidably carried in said casing and normally retained in an extended position from the second end of said casing, and means for adjusting the position of said shaft comprising, a curved hollow housing positioned transversely of the outer end of said shaft, an eye hook on said casing, a slotted ear on said casing diametrically opposite said eye hook, and a link chain secured at one end to said eye hook, said link chain passing through said housing and adapted to be adjustably secured to said slotted ear.
