rI'his invention relates to improvements in manifolding assemblies embodying a plurality .of record and transfer leaves attached together to form a unitary assembly. The invention relates more particularly to manifolding assemblies iof this nature wherein an improved arrangement is provided for quickly and easily effecting selective separation of the record and transfer leaves following entry of the transfer inscriptions.
It is a general object of the invention to provide in a manifolding assembly of the class mentioned, an improved manner of attaching the reccrd and transfer sheets together so that they can be quickly and easily separated following transfer inscription thereof, and whereby an additional record leaf sometimes known as a ledgerxsheet, canbe assembled or collated `in transfer relation with the other assembly leaves while avoiding intions made on the various record `leaves ofthe assembly. A Y I A A further object of the invention is to provide for manifolding assemblies ofthe class mentioned, an improved selective grip arrangement or selective separating means for facilitating selective separation lof the record and transfer leaves of the assembly. l Y
According to a particular feature of improvement of this invention, a plurality of record leaves are attached along one margin thereof by sheet folds or other means of attachment, the attachedA record leaves having opposite free marginal portions to which transfer leaves are respectively` independently attached and supportedfin interleaved transfer relation in the assembly.

Approximately one-half of the transfer sheet B at the' left in Fig. 2 is coated with carbon or similar transfer material 4 on one side of the sheet, while .the other half :of the transfer sheet is simivlarly coated with transfer material 5 at the opposite side of the sheet. In effect, this arrangement provides two transfer leaves 6 and 1, as later morek fully described. i

The copy record leaf `2 may also be provided with a blank form similalr When the record sheet A and transfer sheet B are attached together and folded `as described, it will be noted that the free marginal portions of the record leaves, or those opposite to the folds 8 and 9, are free from attachment with each other but that these margins are individually attached to theadjacent margins of the transfer leaves so as to support the latter in transfer relation in the assembly. There is no attachment between these free margins of the original record leaf I and the copy record leaf 2. Thus, by'means of this arrangement, an unobstructed passageway is provided between the upper and lower record sheets at the end or edge of the assembly through which an additional record leaf or ledger sheet C can be entered and collated in transfer relation with the other assembly leaves, as later more fully described.
Extending along the free marginal portion of the record leaf I is a weakened severance line Il formed'by perforating, scoring, slitting, or the like, and a similar weakened severance line I2 is positioned along the free marginal portion of the copyrrecord leaf 2. When the assembly is in its normal folded condition, as shownin Fig. 1, these weakened severance linesII and I2 will be in substantially superposed. relation. Thus,.a detachable binding stub I3 is provided at the free marginalportion of the original record leaf and attached in supporting relation with the adjacentmarginal portion of the transfer leaf 6, while a similar detachable binding stub I4 relatively superposed with the other stub is provided at the free 'marginal'portion of the copy record leaf `2, attached in supporting relation with the -adjacent margin of the transfer leaf 7. It will thus be seen that there are no loose or unsupported marginal portions of the transferleaves adjacent to the free margins ofthe record leaves.
The transfer sheet B, as best seen in Fig. 2, is provided with a `deep marginal notch I5 adjacent to the fold line 9 and extending to opposite sides of this line. Thus, when the assembly is in normal folded condition, as shown in Fig. 1, this notch I5, provides a selective grip formation whereby the adjacent aligned marginal portions of the record leaves can be engaged or gripped Without at the same time gripping the transfer leaves. This selective grip formation serves as a selective separating means for separating the record and transfer leaves from each other following a transfer inscription of they assembly, as morev fullyvdescribed` below.
Also, as best seen in Fig. 2, weakened severance lines IB are provided in the carbon leaves 6 and 1, each spaced slightly from the fold line 9 and forming narrow detachable strips or sections I1 which may serve as selective separating means for the record and transfer leaves to be used instead of the selective grip formations provided by the notches I5.Y The selective means provided by the narrow detachable strips I'I is described more fully in connection with the modified embodi- 'ment, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The ledger sheet or loose record sheet C may be made of record paper similar to that of the record leaves I and 2 or it may be made of slightly heavier paper, Aand it is ordinarily provided on its upper or inscription receiving surface with a blankform similar to the blank form I9 which is aligned in inscription receiving relation with the latter form when the ledger sheet is inserted into its normal operative position, as shown in Fig. 1. This loose ledger sheet is sized and proportioned so that its outer margin, or-that at the right in Fig. 1, will project slightly beyond the adjacent edge of the original record leaf `I when in operative transfer position so as to be accessible for removal. The folds 8, 9 serve as a stop to position the ledger sheet in its operative position.
In use the improved manifolding assembly can be readily inserted for inscription in a typewriter or `other Writing machine, or the inscriptions can be entered manually by a pencil or the like. If a ledger sheet C is'not already interleaved in transfer position, as'shown in Fig.' 1, it can be quickly andeasilycollated with the other assembly leaves without any danger of getting it in the wrong position so that the inscriptions lwould be irnproperly entered. VThis is for the reason thatthe entrance passageway for the ledger sheet isV en.- tirely free from adjacent loose edgesof transfer leaves, the adjacent edges of the transfer leaves 6 and-" Ibeing attached'to the adjacent overlying and underlying marginal portions of the record leaves I and 2. The only place for inserting the ledger sheet is between the upper and lower attached edges of the transfer leaves 6 and 1, and it is therefore impossible to insert the ledger sheet except in its correct transfer relation between the two adjacent transfer leaves. Insertion of the ledger sheet is additionally facilitated lby extending the lower binding stub I4 with its attached transfer leaf 1 slightly beyond the outer edge of the upperV leaves I and 6. This outwardly extending portion ofthe two lower leaves thus provides a guide for directing the ledger sheet into the entrance passageway to the assembly. Y
'When the inscriptions are entered on the original record leafv I of the assembly,l transfer inscriptions'are made upon the upper surfaces of the ledger sheet C and the copy record leaf .2' by means of the transfer leaves. vAfterentry of the inscriptions the loose ledgersheetis 4ordinarily removed before separation of the record and transfer leaves. Then the inscribed record leaves and the transferv leaves may be quickly and easily severed `from the assembly and simultaneously removed from eachother in a singleoperation by use of the selective separating formations. These selective separating formations include the binding stubs I3 and'ld and the selective grip formation Yformed by the aperture or notch I5` in the transfer sheet adjacent Ato the fold line -9 thereof. Thus the assembly is gripped simultaneously by the user at the binding stubs- I3 and I4 utside oftheweakened sevrance'lines I I and" I2, and at the selective gripfformation at the opposite margin of the assembly in line with the aperture I5. 'Then by exerting a sharp quick pull in opposite directions or by exerting a tearing pull, the record leaves. will be severed fromthe abinding along the weakened severance lines II and I2, while the transfer leaves will still remain attached thereto. Thetworec'ord leavescanthen'b'e separated from each other by severance along the weakened line AIl, whilev thetransferileaves and binding stubs will ordinarily be discarded. y It will be noted that the transfer leaves are securely held in transfer position in the assembly by means of the attaching arrangement kdescribed and that they have no free end edges adjacent to the free end edges of. the'record leaves. l It will be understoodthat the assembly leaves are in close contact with each other in actual use but that they are shown in the drawing as being separated so as'to improve the disclosure.
In the modified embodiment disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, the general structurevand arrangement are substantially the same as dis-- closed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and'corresponding elements areV designated bythe same reference numerals with the addition of the index a. In this embodiment there is no marginal notch in the transfer sheet` B corresponding to the notch I5 shownin Fig. 2, but tran-sverse weakened severance lines I6a similar-*to the lines I6 of Fig.2 extend substantiallyk across the transfer sheet parallel to and spaced from the fold line 9a thereof so as to form the narrow transverse severable strips or sections I'Ia corresponding to the severable strips I'I in Fig. 2.
In use the modified embodiment of Figs. 4 and 5 operates and hasthe advantages substantially as described above in connection with the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2 and 3. But in this secondi embodiment when it is desired tov selectively separate the record and transfer sheets after inscription of the assembly and removal of the'ledger sheet C, the assembly willA be gripped by the user at one margin adjacent'the folds in line with the severable strip Ila and simultaneously gripped at the opposite margin in line with the binding stubs I3a and Illa. Then a quick pull in the opposite directions or a tearing pull will sever the record sheets from-the binding stubs along the weakenedl severance linesv I la;V Iza, andk at the same time the transfer leaves will be severed along the weakened lines Ia, thus leavingk the narrow sections or strips I'Ia free and unattached whereupon they may be discarded. During this severing operation the record and transfer leaves will be stripped or separated-from interleaved relation, whereupon ythe original and copy record leaves may be severedY from eachother along the weakened fold line 8a.
It will be noted that the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2 and S'may be used in the same manner asz the embodiment of Figs..4 and 5 during separation of the assembly leaves; this maybe accomplished by gripping the folded assembly margin in line with the narrow sections I1 of the transfer leaves instead of in line with the .notch I5 thereof.
In the modified embodiment of the improved assembly, as disclosed in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the 'gen'- eral arrangement of elements is substantially the. same as described'abcvey inconnection with-the' other embodiments; and corresponding. elements are designated by the same reference numerals,V with the addition of the index b. In this embodiment the single integral folded transfer sheet, correspondingto the transfer sheets B above described, has been replaced by two separate transfer leaves 6b and 'lb having adjacent yfree edges I8 Apositioned adjacentto the weakened fold lineY 8b of the reccrdsheet Ib. This arrangement could, of course, be` formed by using a single integral transfer sheet and severing it transversely so as to form the two transfer leaves. These transfer leaves 6b and 'Ib are notched or cut away at their marginal portion-s as indicated at I5b, so as toprovide a selective grip formation similar to that 'describedv in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3 above.- Also, the transfer leaves are formed with transverse weakened severance lines |611 to provide the severable narrow sections Ilb. For some purposes the sections I'Ib may be omitted entirely so the selective grip formation will extend entirelyv across the assembly.
In use it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that the embodiment of Figs. 6, '7 and 8 operates substantially as described above in connection-with the other embodiment-s, and that the operative advantages thereof are substantially the same.
While for the purpose of simplicity of disclosure, thedifferent embodiments of the improved manifolding assembly are herein disclosed as including only an original Arecord leaf and one copy record leaf in addition to the ledger sheet, it will be understood that additional transfer copies may be provided for merely by the inclusion in the assembly of additional record and transfer leaves. For example, an additional unit, as shown in Fig.
2 and including record and transfersheets attached as shown, co-uld be superposed upon the unitshown in Fig. 2 and these units attached together by lines of adhesive similar to the adhesive 3 and similarly positioned. When these two attached unit-sl are folded similarly to the assembly shown in Fig. 1 and the ledger' sheet C entered as shown, Van original record leaf and three copy record leaves would then be supplied in addition to the ledger sheet.
Since certain chang-es may be made in the aboveA construction and different embodiments of the invention could bemade without departing from the-scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or sho-wn in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
The invention having thus been fully described, the following is claimed:
A1. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, a plurality of relativ-ely superposed record leaves havingattachment with each other along adjacent marginal parts thereof and having opposite.
a different one of said transfer leaves atan ad-l jacent'marginal parti thereof so as to separately attains supportsaid transfer leaves inltrans'fer relation and to provide a passageway for entry .of an additional sheet between said opposite marginal parts of. the record leaves :intoV transfer relation in the assembly, and to prevent incorrect insertion of .said additional sheet, .said -superpoSed overlapping marginal parts of the record leaves 'being arranged to be simultaneously gripped together, and means including said overlapping marginal parts for simultaneously vsevering said transfer leaves from the assembly `and for selectively separating the record and transfer leaves vfrom each other.
2. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, a plurality of relatively superposedrecord leaves having attachmentwith each other along adjacent marginal parts thereof and having opposite marginal parts opposite to said attachment free of attachment with each other, 4a plurality of transfer leaves in superposed transfer relation with said record leaves, said opposite marginal parts of the record leaves being arranged in relatively superposed loverlapping relation and each said marginal part having supporting attachment to a different one of said transfer leaves at an adjacent marginal part thereof so as to separately support said transfer leaves in transfer relation and to provide a passageway for entry of an additional sheet between said opposite marginal parts of the record leaves into transfer relation with one of said vtransfer leaves in the assembly, and to prevent incorrect insertion of said additional sheet, and selective separating formations spaced apart in the assembly and providing for selective separation of said record and transfer leaves, said separating formations including said overlapping marginal `parts of the record leaves positioned to be simultaneously gripped together. y
3. In a manifolding assembly, in coinbination, a plurality of relatively superposed record leaves having attachment with each other along adjacent marginal parts thereof and 'having opposite marginal parts opposite to said attachment free of attachment with each other, a plurality of transfer leaves in superposed transfer relation with said record leaves, each of said opposite marginal parts of the record leaves having supporting attachment to a different one of said transfer leaves at an adjacent marginal part thereof so as to separately support said transfer leaves vin transfer relation, and to provide a passageway for entry of an additional sheet between said opposite marginal parts lof the record leaves into transfer relation with one of said transfer leaves in the assembly, and to prevent Lincorrect insertion of said additional sheet, and selective separating formations spaced apart in the assembly and providing for selective separation of said record and transfer leaves, said selective separating formations including weakened severance lines in the record leaves respectively positioned along each of said opposite marginal parts thereof inside of the respective said supporting attachments and forming relatively superposed overlapping binding stubs that can be simultaneously gripped together for effecting said selective separation.

In a manifolding assembly, in combination, a plurality of relatively superposed record leaves having attachment with each other along adjacent marginal parts thereof and having opposite marginal parts opposite to ysaid `attachment free of attachment with each other, a plurality of transfer leaves in superposed transfer relation with 'said record leaves, :said opposite 'marginal par-ts of the record leaves being arranged in relatively superposed .overlapping :relation and each said marginal part having ysupporting attachment to a different one of said transfer leaves at an adjacent marginal part thereof so as .to separately support said transfer leaves .in transfer relation and togprovide a passageway for entry of an addit-ional sheet between said opposite marginal parts of the record leaves into transfer relation with one of .said transfer leaves in the assembly, and to prevent incorrect insertion ofsaid :additionalsheet, and selectiveseparating formations spaced @apart .in the assembly and providing for selective separation of .said record and transfer leaves, one of said selective separating formations including weakened severance lines lthe record leaves respectively positioned .along eachlof said opposite fmarginal parts thereof inside of the respective said :supporting attachment 'and forming .relatively ysuperposed overlapping vbinding stubs that can be simultaneously .gripped together for effecting said selective separation, said transfer leaves having their marginal parts opposite to their said .supporting attachments free from attachment to the record leaves and formed to provide another of said selective separating formations.
5. In amanifolding assembly, in combination, a plurality of relatively vsuperposed record leaves having attachment `with eachother along adjacent marginal parts thereof and having opposite marginal Vparts opposite :to .said attachment vfree of attachment with each other, a plurality of transfer leaves in .superposed transfer relation with said record leaves, each of said opposite marginal parts of the record leaves having supporting attachment to adifferent one of said transfer leaves at an adjacent marginal part thereof so as to separately support said Atransfer leaves in transfer relation .and to provide .a passageway for entry of .an additional sheet between said opposite marginal parts of the record leaves into transfer relation with Vone of said transfer leaves in the assembly, `and to prevent incorrect insertion Vof said additional sheet, selective separating formations spaced :apart intheassembly and providing `for selective separation of said record and transfer leaves, one A:of said selective separating formations including 'weakened severance lines in the record leaves respectively positioned along said opposite marginal-parts thereof inside of the respective said `supporting attachments and forming relatively superposed .overlapping vbinding stubs that can be simultaneously gripped together for effecting said `selective separation, said .transfer leaves having their marginalV parts opposite to `their'said .supporting .attachments free from attachment to .the record .leaves and free from attachmentwith each other, said free marginal parts of the transfer leaves having edge portions inset from fad-jacent 4edges of the record leaves to provide another of said selective separating formations.
6.. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, a plurality of relatively :superposed record leaves having ,attachment with each other along adjacent marginal `parts thereof and having opposite marginal parts opposite to said `attachment free of Yattachment, witheach other, a, plurality of transfer leaves in. superposed :transfer relation with-said [record leaves, each of said .opposite marginal parts ofthe record leaves having supporting attachment 'to a different one of .said transfer leaves vat an adjacentl marginal'part thereof so as to separately support said transfer leaves in transfer relation and to provide a passageway for entry of an additiona1 sheet between said opposite marginal parts of the record leaves into transfer relation with one of said transfer leaves in the assembly, and to prevent incorrect insertion of said additional sheet, selective separating formtions spaced apart in the assembly and providing for selective separation of said record and transfer leaves, one of said selective separating formations including weakened severance lines in the record leaves respectively positioned along said opposite marginal parts thereof inside of the respective said supporting attachments and forming relatively superposed overlapping binding stubs that can be simultaneously gripped together for effecting said selective separation, and another of said selective separating formations including weakened severance lines in marginal parts of said transfer leaves extending adjacent to a fold therebetween positioned opposite to said supporting attachments thereof and forming detachable folded transfer leaf sections overlapping each other and overlapping adjacent marginal parts of the record leaves.
7. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, a sheet of record material folded intermediate its ends so as to form relatively superposed attached record leaves having marginal portions opposite to the fold of the folded sheet which are free from attachment with each other, each of said free marginal portions of the record leaves having a weakened severance line forming a severable binding stub, said binding stubs being free from attachment with each other, a plurality of transfer leaves interleaved in transfer relation with said record leaves, a different one of said transfer leaves having supporting attachment at a marginal part thereof with each one of said severable binding stubs but being free of attachment with another said binding stub, said severable binding stubs being in overlapping superposed relation whereby they can be simultaneously gripped together to provide a separating formation for selective separation of the record and transfer leaves, the margins of said transfer leaves opposite to said supporting attachments thereof being positioned adjacent to said fold of the folded sheet, and a selective separating formation for the record and transfer leaves adjacent to said fold.
