This invention relates to a combination hand appliance or tool for bending and also for shearing light metal rods, bars and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a compact and simply constructed appliance or tool which will efficiently perform either of the two operation mentioned and is convenient and easy to operate by hand.
The appliance consists basically of a slotted holder in which the rod or bar to be operated on is placed, a lever movable about said holder, a bending pin or abutment carried by the lever and adapted, when the lever is moved in one direction, to act on the rod or bar to bend same, and a shearing member also carried by the lever and movable in sliding relationship to the surface of the slotted holder to shear the rod or bar when the lever is moved in the opposite direction.
The slotted holder i rigidly secured to a base plate and the lever is arranged to pivot on the holder and is actuated preferably through a handlever and link connection to secure the requisite leverage.
The appliance is more fully described aided by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are side views illustrating the use of the appliance for bending metal rod or bars.
Fig. 5 and 6 are similar views to Figs. 3 and 4 but illustrating the use of the appliance for shearing the rods or bars.
As is shown in these views, the appliance comprises a base plate I on which is rigidly supported the slotted holder 2. Said holder has a cylindrical head portion 3 and a shank portion 4 of reduced diameter which is secured in a hole 5 in the base plate. The head has a diametrical slot 6 in which the metal rod or bar to be bent or sheared is placed.
A bar or strap as I is secured to the rear of the base plate I as by welding and carries a screw 8 which is screwed into a tapped hole 9 in the holder 2 to secure it to the base plate.
The portion I0 of the holder between :the shank part 4 and the head 3 is of circular form and constitutes a pivot or bearing for the lever II so that said lever is movable about the holder.
The lever I I carries a bending pin or abutment I2 which lies adjacent to the upper end of the slot 6.
The lever II also carries a shearing element or 2 blade I3 so arranged as to slide around or follow the periphery of the head 3 of the slotted holder and move across the lower end of the slot 8.
The lever II is actuated through a link connection I4 from a hand-lever I'zi'pivoted at I6 to the base plate I. The hand-lever may be of any approved length to secure substantial leverage, and a series of adjustment holes I! may be provided in it and the link I4 so that the leverage can be varied as required. The link It is detachably connected to the hand-lever I5 by means of a removable screw I8 having a suitable turning handle a I9. The screw I8 may be anchored to the hand-lever I5 by means of a chain 20 or the like, see Fig. l, to prevent loss or misplacement.
In the use of the appliance, the rod or bar 2| to be operated on is held in the slot 6 of the holder. If it is desired to bend the rod or bar, it is held in desired position in relation to the bending pin I2 as shown in Fig. 3 and the lever I I actuated by the hand-lever I5 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3 to move said pin against the rod or bar and bend same away from the head 3 as shown in Fig. 4 to the extent required.
For shearing, the rod or bar 2| is held in correct position in relation to the lower or shearing end of the slot 6 in the holder as shown in Fig. 5 and the lever II actuated now in the reverse direction to cause the shearing element or blade I3 to move across the lower end of the slot and shear the protruding portion 22 of the rod or bar as shown in Fig. 6.
Preferably during the bending operation, the link I4 is connected to the hand-lever I5 by utilizing the tWo outermost of the holes I! of said hand-lever and link while, for the shearing ac tion, the two innermost of said holes H are used giving greater leverage when shearing the rod or bar.
The slotted holder 2 is rigidly secured to the base plate I to prevent rotation by any suitable means, such as for instance, by inserting one or more small screws or keys between the shank part 4 and the hole 5.
The base plate I preferably has side lugs or flanges 23 by which it can be secured to a suitable support either horizontal or vertical. Said lugs or flanges may, for convenience of manufacture, be welded as at 24 to the base plate.
The bending pin I2 may, if desired, be provided with an anti-friction roller as 25 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to facilitate bending of the rod or bar.

What I claim is: 1. A combination hand appliance for bending and shearing metal rods or bars comprising a.
base plate, a holder carried thereby and having a cylindrical head provided with a slot in which'the rod or bar to be operated on is placed, .a lever movable about said holder, a bending pinor abutment carried by the lever and adapted, when the lever is moved in one direction, to move across one end of the slot in the holder and act on the rod 01' bar to bend it, and a shearin member also carried-by the lever and movable in sliding relationship with the periphery of the head of the holder to move across the other end of the slot and shear .the rod or bar when the lever is moved in the opposite direction.
2. A combination hand appliance for bending and shearing metal rods or bars comprising a base plate, a holder carried thereby and having a cylindrical head provided with a diametrical slot in which the rod or bar to be operated on is placed, .a lever movable about said holder, a bending pin or abutment carried by the lever and adapted, when the lever is moved in one direction,
to move across one end of the slot in the holder and act on the rod or bar to bend it,a shearing member also carried by the lever and movable in sliding relationship with the periphery of the head of the holder to move across the other end of the slot and shear the rod or bar when the lever is moved inthe opposite direction; a handlever pivoted to the base plate and a, link connecting said hand-lever to the first mentioned lever so that the latter is actuated by the handlever, the connection of the link to the hand-lever being adjustable to provide difierent leverages for the bending and shearing operations.
