This invention relates to a new and adjustable screen, which can be applied to any sick bed, and which serves as a precautionary measure against contagion and infection, insures comfort and privacy, and prevents accidents.

Thus one of the objects of my invention is to provide a reliable, durable and light structure for a screen, which may readily be applied to any sick bed, and which may be drawn aside to admit the patient, and which may be completely folded when not in use.

Another object of my invention is to provide a screen structure, which presents means for completely covering the top with a cloth for steam inhalation. With this object in view the invention consists in the various novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing, I0 designates a bed having the head posts II and the foot posts I2 and to which the protective screen is clamped.

An adjustable clamp I3 attached to each of the posts II and I2 holds an upwardly extending hinge rod I4 on which the corner plates I5 are hinged by the lugs I6 and I1. A collar I8 at the upper end and a similar collar I9 at the lower end of the hinge rod I4 maintain the position of the clamp I3 and the corner plates I5. A metal strap 20 pivoted at 2| to the upper portion of the corner plates I5 has a pivot 22 at its lower end which, in turn, supports the strap 23 extending upward to the pivot 24. This pivot 24 holds the strap 25 and has a shoulder pin 26 riding in an elongated slot 21 at the lower portion of the corner plate I5. The straps 28, 29 and 30 are arranged in a similar manner and are pivoted at the points of intersection 3I as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The combination of the respective straps pivoted in spaced relationship make up a straight line linkage, or what is commonly called, a lazy tong motion.

A connection plate 32 pivoted at 33 has a shoulder pin 34 at its lower end which rides in the slot 21. The connection plate 32 has the pins 35 at its upper and lower ends which hold the locking plate 36 with a slotted portion 31 to engage a knob 38 on a similar connection plate 39.

The adjustable clamp I3 as shown in Figs. 4 and 7 is divided into two sections and has its pivot on the hinge rod I4. A threaded lug 40 extends from the lower jaw 4I having the set l0 screw 42 pressing against a lug 43 on the upper jaw 44. It will be noted that the jaws 4| and 44 as shown can be adjusted to any round bed post, but some jaws can also be made to conform with a square or rectangular bed post. 15

A screen 45 having a series of eyelets 46 in spaced relation to a number of hooks 41 extending outwardly from the upper pivoted portion of the straps 20, 28, 29 and 3Il hold the screen in the framework. A series of snap fasteners 48 20 are also arranged on the screen to hold the opposite aps together.

Referring to Figs. 5 and 7 it will be noted that the screen structure is contracted and with the added feature of having the corner plates I5 25 hinged as at I4 a very compact structure can be arranged when not in use. 'I'he hooks 41 extending outwardly from the upper part of the structure are also available as a means to hold a top fabric in case the top of the bed requires 30 complete covering.

The screen proper consists of two separable sections each adapted to enclose about one-half the bed and detachably connecting with each other at points midway between the head and 35 foot of the bed.

While I have herein described a single embodiment of my invention for the purpose of clear disclosure it is evident that many changes may be made in the specific structure shown '40 Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claim.

What I claim is:

In a screen structure adapted to enclose a bed on four sides thereof, in combination, a plurality 45 of rods, means for clamping each rod in vertical position to a respective post of the bed, a plurality of vertical plates, means by which two of said plates are pivotally mounted on each of said rods to swing horizontally and lazy tong means 50 adjustably connecting each one of said plates With an adjacent plate on an adjoining rod whereby the device may be collapsed and also adjusted to beds of varying dimensions.
