HEAD FOR GOLF STICKS AND THE LIKE Filed May 23, 1951 v F1 3, g a
kw svi i ATT RNEY Patented Oct. 2, 1934 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
My invention relates toimprovements in heads for golf-sticks and the like.
An object of my invention is to provide a new and useful device of the character specified;
A further object of my invention is to provide in a golf-stick means whereby the eifect of the blow delivered by the head may be augmented;
A further object of my invention is to provide in a golf-stick a member which, in combination with the head, may serve to increase the impact force of the blow delivered by the head.
I accomplish these and other objects by my invention, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view of a golf-stick with parts shown in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a view of the head with parts broken away to show the hammer or plunger, and
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 in Figure 1.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
As is well understood, a golf-stick is used to drive a ball by impact.
My improved head is particularly adapted for use in golf-sticks and the like adapted to strike and drive a ball or other moveable object and may be employed to advantage in any type of golfstick and I do not intend to limit myself to any particular type of golf -stick, the type shown being selected merely for the purpose of illustration.
The golf-stick comprises a handle 1, by which it is swung, and a head 2, adapted to impact with and drive a ball, not shown.
I provide in the head 2 of a golf-stick, a loose hammer or plunger 3, of suitable weight, and pref erably comprising a head 4 and shank 5, seated in a compartment 6 within the head 2.
An impact plate '7 forms a cover for the compartment 6 and is secured to the head 2 by means of screws 8, 8. The plate '7 is countersunk in the impact face of the head 2 and is preferably of brass or other suitable metal.
The device being thus assembled, the loose hammer 3, in the head 2, will be drawn back in its seat 6 and spaced from the plate 7 as the club is swung for a blow and will remain spaced from the plate 7 during the period of swing of the club and until the impact plate 7 or head 2 contacts with the ball or other object, not shown, when the momentum of the hammer 3 and the retard of travel of the club will cause the hammer 3 to strike the under side of the face plate 7, thereby imparting a supplemental impact or blow to the ball so struck and causing the ball to travel a greater distance than would result from a blow of like force imparted by a club of the usual type.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a golf-stick, the combination of a head,
a hammer loosely seated in the head, and a plate forming the striking face thereof and adapted to be struck by the said hammer.
2. In a golf-stick, the combination of a handle,
a head, an impact plate forming the striking face on the head, and a hammer within the head adapted to strike the said impact plate.
3. In a golf-stick comprising a handle and a head, the combination of a hammer loosely seated in a compartment in the head and having a shank,
a contact plate on the striking face of the said head and forming a cover for said compartment and adapted to be struck by the hammer on contact with a ball to be driven.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a golf club having a head, a compartment in the said head, a loose plunger in the said compartment comprising a head and a shank, and an impact plate covering the said compartment and countersunk in the head of the golf club.
CHARLES V. ACKERMAN.
