This invention relates to a machine for bending angle bars of T-shape cross section. The main objects ofthis invention are to provide an improved machine particularly suitable for bending short lengths of bars which are angle shaped in cross section; to provide a machine which will bend a straight piece of T-shaped stock into semi-circular form; to provide a machine in which relatively short lengths of angle bar stock may be bent throughout the entire length thereof and to provide a machine of simple andsubstantial construction which will give efficient and satisfactory service and which maybe readily adjusted to compensate for wear and use.

In the construction shown in the drawings the main frame comprises a base 9 which has a pair of up- standingside frames 10 and 11 bolted or otherwise suitably secured thereon in spaced parallel relation. An electric motor 12 is mounted on the base 9 and the armature shaft 13 thereof is provided witha inion gear 14 which meshes with a gear 15. l zeyed to a counter shaft 16 which is journaled at its ends on brackets 17 and 18 which are secured to the base of the main frame. Lock nuts 46 and 47 are provided on the set'jscrews 44 and 45 109 for securing the set screws in position when adjusted.
The shaft 37 pivotally supports a subframe which comprises a pair of frame arms 48 and 49 disposed in spaced parallel relation. The arms 48 and 49 are mounted adjacent one end thereof on the shaft 37 and said arms are generally of arcuate shape. A forming 1 011 50 is keyed on the shaft 87 in radial alignment with the main forming roll 26 and spacer sleeves 51 and 52 are interposed between the sides of roller 50 and the adjacent sub-frame arms 48 and 49 respectively. The sub-frame arms 48, and 49 project forwardly from their point of pivotal mounting on the shaft 37 and such forwardly projecting ends have a shaft 53 ourn aled therein which supports an idler roll 54 keyed thereon.
The oppositely extending portions of the sub-frame arms 48 and 49 have shafts 55, 56 and 57 journaled thereon in spaced parallel relation which have forming rollers 58, 59, and 60 respectively keyed thereto. The disposition of the forming rollers carried by the sub-frame and sha t 37 is such that said rol ers are spaced angularly with respect to the axis of the main shaft 21, and closely adjacent to the outer periphery ofthe main forming roll 26.
The roll 58, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, is provided at one end thereof with a gear 61 which meshes. with the driving gear 32 keyed on main shaft 21. The medial part of the face of the roll 58 has an annular row of shallow depressions 62 formed therein which aids said roll in gripping and turning down the forward end of the angle bar which is to be bent insaid machine.
The forming roll 59 as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings is provided at the end opposite to the gear 61 of roll 58, with a gear 63. which meshes with the drive gear 31 keyed on main shaft 21. V
The forming roll 60 as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings is provided at the end thereof opposite to the gear 63 of roll 59, with a gear 64 which meshes with the driving gear 32. The foregoing staggered disposition of the driving gears for the rollers 58, 5'9 and 60 permits these forming rolls to be closely spaced together without the gears interfering with each other. i
The depending free endsof the sub-frame arms 48and 49 are secured to a tie bar 65 by. cap screws 66 and 67 which rigidly hold theends ofthe. arms in definitely spaced parallel relation. The bar 65 extends horizontally across the rear end of'the machine in overlapping relation to the side frames 10 and 11.
The overlapping extreme ends of the bar 65 are drilled to slidably receive studs 68 and 69 whichare threaded into the side frames 10 and 11. The stud 68 is provided with lock nuts 70 and 71 which embrace opposite sides of the bar 65. The stud 69 is also provided withlock;
nuts 72 and 73 which likewise embrace opposite sides of the tie bar 65. Adjustment of the free ends of the sub-frame relatively to the main shaft 21 is secured by suitably positioning the lock nuts 70, 71, 72 and 7 3 on their respective studs.
' The side frames 10 and 11 near their top ends are secured together by a pair of tie bars 74 and 75 which are arranged in spaced parallel relation and which have their respective ends secured in said side frames.
The front side of the machine is provided with a horizontally disposed table member 76 in the form of an angle bar which has its opposite ends secured to the side frames'lO and 11. The upper side of the table 76 at its medial point is provided with spaced guide blocks 77 and 78 secured by angle clips 79 and 80 respectively upon which the work to be passed into the machine is placed.
The rear side of the depending flange of the table 76 has an angle clip 81 secured thereto, the outwardly extending flange of which is positioned in the peripheral slot 28 of the main forming roll 26 so as to be in position to knock out the angle bar which has been passed through the machine and suitably curved thereby.
A forwardly inclined chute 825s provided between the side frames 10 and 11 and direct ly beneath the forming roll 26 for receiving the. pieces of work as they are knocked out of the main forming roll by the clip 81.
In the operation of this machine the length of T-bar stock which is to be bent into semicircular shape is placed upon the guide blocks 77 and 78 with the web portion 29 of-tho T-bar in the slot between the blocks. The bar is then pushed forwardly underneath the rollers 54 and 50 which are adjusted so as to ti ghtly grip the laterally extending flanges 30 of theT-bar by the roller 50 and the main forming roller 26.
The outer face of the main forming roll 26, being knurled, bites into the under side of the flanges 30 and. feeds the piece of stock into the machine until the frontend thereof strikes the forming roller 58. The forming roll 58 engages the incoming end of the bar and bends the same downwardly, the bar beingheld against lateral deflection by reason of the web 29 being embraced snugly in the slot 28 of the main forming. roll. The shallow depressions 62 on the forming roll 58 aid in gripping and securing theT-bar during its bending operation.
As the T-bar continues through the machine it engages therolls 59 and 60 and is thus bent throughout its entire length. a
The web 29, by reason of its snug fit in slot 28 causes the formed piece of stock toremain on the main forming roll after 1t has 7 passed the last roll 60 and continues around until it strikesagainst the flange of the angle clip 81 at which time the piece of T-bar is knocked out of the main forming roll and drops down onto theforwardly inclined chute 82 from which it is discharged out of the front side of the machine.
The shaft 37 may be vertically adjusted with respect to the main shaft 21 by means of the set screws 44 and 45 so as to compensate for slight variation in the thickness of the stock and for wear in the machine. The rolls 58, 59 and 60 may be adjusted with respect to their distances from the main shaft 21 by means of the threaded studs 68 and 69and lock nuts carried thereby, the entire sub frame being swingableby movement of the tie bar 65.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim: j
1. A bending machine comprising a main frame, a main shaft journaled on said frame, a forming roll on said main shaft, a second shaft journaled on said frame in spaced parallel relation to said main shaft, a sub-frame pivotally mounted on said second sh'aftya plurality of forming rolls journaled on said sub-frame for cooperating with said 'first mentioned main shaft roll and means for driving some of said rolls' to feed work through said machine.
2. A bending machine comprising a main frame, a forming roll j ournaled on said frame, asub-frame shiftable and rotatable on said main frame, a plurality of forming rolls journaled on said sub-frame and angularly spaced adjacent the periphery of said first mentioned roll and means for moving said sub-frame into and holding the latter in selected positions for predetermining the relation of the rolls of said sub-frame and said main roll. i
3. A bending machine comprising a main frame, a main shaft-journaled on said frame,
a second shaft journaled on said frame in;
means for adjustingsaid second shaft 'rela tively to said mam shaft, means for ad]ust-' ing the free end of said sub-frame relatively V to said main shaft, a forming roll on said main shaft, a plurality offormingrolls on said sub-frame for, cooperating withsaid main shaft roll and means for rotating some of said rolls to feed work through saldmachine;
4. A bending machinecomprising a main frame havin a pair "of Lip-standing side frames disposed in spaced parallel relation;- a main shaft ournaled on said'sideframes, guideways on said side frames, boxingsshd rality of forming rolls able on said guideways, a second shaft journaled in said boXings, means for adjusting the boxings of said second shaft relatively to said main shaft, a sub-frame comprising a pair of frame arms disposed in spaced parallel relation, said frame arms being pivoted adjacent one end thereof on said second shaft, a main forming roll on said main shaft, a plurality of forming rolls disposed between said arms for cooperating with said main roll and,
on said sub-frame in radial alignment with said roll, said sub-frame being pivoted adj acent one end thereof, a tie bar on the free end of said sub-frame, means for securing'said tie bar to said main frame in adjusted positions and means for driving said forming rolls to feed work through said machine.
6. A bending machine comprising a main frame, a main shaft ournaled on said main frame, a main forming roll secured on said main shaft, a pair of drive gears secured on said main shaft, one at each side of said main roll, a second shaft journaled onsaid main frame in spaced parallel relation to said main shaft, a sub-frame'carried'by said second shaft, a plurality of forming rolls journaled on said sub-frame adjacent the periphery of said main roll, a gear on each of said subframe rolls, one of said sub-frame roll gears meshing with one of said main shaft driving gears and another of said sub-frame roll gears meshing with the other said main'shaft driving gears and means for driv'ingsaid main shaft. a 7 7 7. A bending machine comprising a main frame, a main shaft j'ournaled on-said main frame, a main formingroll' secured on said main shaft, a pair of drive gears secured on said main shaft, one at each side of said main roll, a second shaft journaled on said main frame in spaced parallel relation to said'main shaft, a forming roll on sald second shaft, a
sub-frame carried by sa d second shaft, a plujournaled on said subframe adjacent the periphery of said main roll, a gear on each of said'sub-frame rolls, one of said subeframe roll gearsmeshing with one of said main shaft drive gears and another of said sub-frame Trollg'ears meshing with the other of said main-shaft; driving gears, a pair of intermeshinggearsyone on said main shaft and the other onsaid second sub-frame carriedby said second shaft, a plurality of forming rolls journaled on said subframe adjacent the periphery of said main roll, a gear on each of said sub-frame rolls, one of said sub-frame roll gears meshing with one of said main shaft drive gears and another of said sub-frame roll gears meshing with the other of said main shaft driving gears, a pair of intermeshing gears, one on said main shaft and the other on said second shaft and means for adjusting said second shaft and sub-frame relatively to said main form ing roll. p

said roll having a radially extending slot in the face thereof for receiving the web of an angle bar, a shiftable unit having a plurality of forming rolls journaled in angularly spaced relation adjacent the periphery of and for cooperating with said main forming roll, means'yieldably urging said unit away from said main forming roll and means for driving some of said rolls to feed work through said machine.
10. A bending machine comprising a frame, a main forming roll journaled on said frame, said roll having a medially disposed radially for receiving the web of a T-bar, a tiltable unit journaled on said frame having a plurality of forming rolls located in angularly spaced relation adjacent the periphery of and for cooperating with said main forming roll,
' said plurality of forming rolls extending axially on each side 'of said slot for bearing on both flanges of said T-bar.
11. In a machine for bending metal sections, the combination of a pair of related rolls,.a mounting swingable about the axis of oneof said related rolls, a series of cooperating rolls carried by saldmounting and disposed about the axis of said other related roll,
means fordriving one of said related rolls, and a guide for support ng each section '1 while it is fed to said rolls.

In a machine for bending metal sections, the combination ofa pair of" related rolls, a mounting swingable about the axis of one of said related rolls, a series of cooperating rolls carried by said mounting and disposed about the axis of said other related roll, means for driving said latter related roll and one of said cooperating rolls, and a guide for supporting each section while it is fed to said rolls. 7 1 1 extending slot in the face thereof cooperating roll being geared 13 In a machine for bending metal sections, the combination with a frame, of a guiding roll, a series of cooperating rolls disposed about the axis of said guiding roll, means for driving said guiding roll, and a support movably mounted on said frame and provided on one side with devices which serve as a guide for each section while it is fed to said rolls and provided on its other side with a stop to arrest the sections after passing between said rolls.

Ina machine for bending metal sections, the combination of a: pair of related rolls, a series of cooperating rolls disposed about the axis of one of said related rolls, means for driving said related rolls, a guide for supporting each section while it is fed to said rolls, and a roll in front of said related rolls and in opposed relation to said'guide and cooperating therewith to guide each section to said related rolls.

In amachine for bending metal sections, the combination of a guiding roll, a series of cooperating rolls disposed about the axis of said guiding roll, means for driving one of said rolls, a guide for supporting each section while it is fed to said rolls, and means carried by said guide arrangedto be engaged by each blank as it completes its pass through said rolls and arrest it and guide it to a receiver.

In a machine for bending metal sections, the combination of a pair of related rolls, amounting swingable about the axis of one of said related rolls, a series of cooperating rolls carried by said mounting and disposed about the axis of said other related roll, means for driving said other related roll and one ofsaid cooperating rolls, and a guide for supporting each section whileit is fed to said rolls, the shaft for the driven to the shaft of the driven related roll. In a machine for bending metal sec-' tions, the combination of a support, a guiding roll rotatably mounted thereon, a separate roll rotatably mounted on said support in opposed relation'to said guiding roll, a series of rolls disposed substantially in an are about the axis of said guiding roll and co} operating with-it and said separate roll for bending metal sections, a pair of spaced members swingable about the axisof said separate roll and supporting said series of rolls for unitary adjustment about said axis relative to said guiding roll, and a guide for I supporting each section while it fed to supporting members mounted at one end on V the shaft of said separate roll, a series'of rolls 7 rotatably supported between said members substantially in an arc about the axis of said guiding roll and cooperating with said guiding and separate rolls to bend metal sections, and means for rigidly supporting the opposite ends of said members.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a support, a guiding roll rotatably mounted thereon, means for driving said roll, a separate roll rotatably mounted on said support in opposed relation to said guiding roll, a pair of spaced supporting members pivotally mounted at one end to swing about the axis of said separate roll, and a series of rolls rotatably supported between said members substantially in an are about the axis of said guiding roll and 00- operating therewith and said separate roll to bend metal sections.
20. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a support, a guiding roll rotatably mounted thereon, a gear fixed to the shaft of said guiding roll, a separate roll rotatably mounted on said support in opposed relation to said guiding roll, a pair of spaced supporting members pivotally mounted at one end to swing about the axis of said separate roll, a series of rolls rotatably supported between said members substantially in an are about the axis of said guiding roll and cooperating therewith and said separate roll to bend metal sections, a gear fixed to the shaft of one of said rolls and meshing with the gear fixed to the shaft of said guiding roll, and means for driving the guiding roll shaft.
21. In a machine of the class described, the
combination of a support, a guiding roll rotatably mounted thereon, a separate roll rotatably mounted on said support in opposed relation to said guiding roll, a pair of spaced supporting members pivotally mounted at one end to swing about the axis of said separate roll, a series of rolls rotatably supported between said members substantially in an are about the axis of said guiding roll and cooperating therewith and said separate roll to bend metal sections, gearing between the shaft of each of said series of rolls and the shaft of said guiding roll, and means for driving the guiding roll shaft.
22. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a support, a guiding roll rotatably mounted thereon, gears fixed to the shaft of said guiding roll, a separate roll rotatably mounted on said support in opposed relation to said guiding roll, a pair of spaced supporting members pivotally mounted at one end toswing about the axis of said separate roll, a series of rolls rotatably supported between said members substantially in an are about the axis of said guiding roll and cooperating therewith and said separate roll to bend metal sections, a gear fixed to the shaft of each of said series of rolls and meshing with one of the gears fixed to the shaft of said guiding roll, said gears on the shafts of the series of rolls being alternately arranged on opposite sides of the adj acent rolls, and means for driving the guiding roll shaft.
23. In a machine of the class described, the
