ttorfm y Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DANIEL J. MURRAY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS GAS- PARIC, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS VALVE-OPERATING MECI-IANISM Application filed January 12, 1928.
The present invention relates to means for normally maintaining a valve closed, said means being actuable to open the valve.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a mechanism of this nature which 1s simple in its construction, strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Another very import-ant object of the invention resides in the provision of a mechanism of this nature which allows ready and convenient access to the valve and parts thereof particularly for the purpose of renewing packing glands and the like.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invent-ion resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the mechanism 2 showing the same on a valve, a portion of the valve being broken away and shown in section,
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof,
Fi ure 3 is a detail sectional elevation showing an adjustment, and
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes the valve with inlet 6 and outlet 7. The numeral 8 denotes the valve head from which projects the usual valve stem 9 through packing nut 10. This valve structure is illustrated merely by way of example. Numerous other valve structures Will operate efficiently with the improved structure about to be described as will be apparent to those skilled in this art.
The numeral 11 denotes the plate having bosses 12 rising from the ends thereof and threadedly receiving bolts 13 which project through openings 14 in a plate 15. Nuts 16 are threadedly engaged on the bolts 13 and limit the upward movement of the plate 15. Springs 17 of the coil type are disposed about the bolts 13 and impinge against the plates 11 Serial No. 246,255.
and 15. The plate 15 is provided with a notch 18 to receive a reduced portion 19 of the valve stem 9 so that a head like portion 20 on the reduced portion 19 rests on the plate 15. A frame 21 rises from the plate 15 and has journaled therein a roller or wheel 22. A hollow boss 23 depends from the top of the frame and has threadedly engaged therein a stem 24 which may be locked in different positions by a nut 25. This stem 24 is adjusted downwardly to engage the member 20 so as to clamp this member 20 into engagement with the plate 15 thus preventing accidental dis placement.
From the above description it will be seen that the apparatus normally holds the valve head 8 seated and the valve closed. A wheel 26 is fixed on a shaft 27 and rotates therein and has an offset cam portion 28 which is adapted to engage the roller 22 thereby moving the frame 21 and plate 15 downwardly so as to push the stem 9 downwardly to open the valve.
It is to be noted that the packing nut 10 is accessible at all times so that the gland may berenewed without disassembling this mechanism.
It is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is:
A mechanism of the class described comprising a plate adapted to be mounted on a valve, bolts projecting from the plate, a second plate having openings for slidably receiving the bolts, nuts on the bolts to limit the movement of the second plate, springs about the bolt to hold the plates separated, means for attaching a valve stem to the second plate, a frame rising from the second plate, a roller journaled in the frame, a wheel having a cam thereon engageable with the roller so that the second plate may be moved toward said first-mentioned plate, said frame having a hollow boss projecting therefrom, a stem threaded in the boss so that the boss may be adjusted with respect to the second plate for clamping the valve stem thereto.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
DANIEL J. MURRAY.
