y A pair of adjustable cooperating feed rolls 26 and 27 are secured to substantially parallel but relatively adjustable shafts 40 and 2 8, Figure 2, mounted upon the casting 4 as hereinafter fully described. Only one of the rolls, viz, roll 27 is formed to accommodate the wire 7, the other roll 26 simply cooperating therewith to pinch and properly pull the 27 consisting of a plurality of peripheral grooves 27', of different sizes to care for wires of dierent diameters. Secured to the outer ends of the respective shafts are cooperating gears 41 and 42 by means of which the posi- 'tive rotation ofthe feed roll 26 is effected.
The rotation of the main shaft 28 is effected byan operating handle 29, the actual connection between this\handle and the shaft consisting of the following means. The hub of a ratchet wheel 30 is secured to the shaft 28, this ratchet wheel 30 cooperating with a spring-pressed pawl 31 secured by means of a bolt 33 to the handle 29. In order to provide for the feed of wire portions of different lengths, I secure to the base 2 by means of bolts 35, Figure 9, an annular plate 34 having two elongated slots 36 intersected by wing screws 37 provided with lock nuts 38 and extending inner ends 39 lying in the path of movement of the rib 32 formed on handle 29, as plainly shown in Figures 2, 9 and 10.

The shaft 28 is mounted in bearings 43 and 44 and the shaft 40 in bearings 45 and 46. These screws bear upon horizontallyaligned plates 48 contained within recesses 53 formed in the bosses 50 and held tightly up against the bottom ends of the screws 51 and 52 by means of coil springs 54 mounted upon the respective bearing blocks" 45 and 46. lt will be `noted in Figure 2 that a clearance 77 is shown between the bearing blocks 45 and 46 and thebosses 5() whereby it is indicated that the shaft 40 and hence the feed roll 26 can be somewhat vertically adjusted to provide a varying pressure upon the'wire 7 or to provide for feeding wire of varying' diameter. Furthervertical adjustment is provided between the bearing blocks 43 and 46, 44 and 45, respectively, by the following means. A bolt 56 intersects the casting 4 and is adapted'to bear against and vertically adjust the bearing block 43, clearance being provided for this adjustment through the medium of a recess 2 formed in the base 2 'and within which the head of the' bolt 56 is contained. A second bolt 57 provided with a lock nut 58 bears against the undersurface of the bearing block 45 and is threaded into the upper surface of the opposed lower bearing block 44. These several means provide vertical adjustment for the feeding mechanism whereby the wire 7 is fed in proper alignment to cutting means now to be ldescribed and whereby the proper cooperation of the feed rolls 26 and 27 may be secured for feeding wire of varying diameters.
' The cutting knife 6l is simply a suitable bar having a shear blade section and is pivoted at one end upon a bolt 64 to an upright bracket 62 secured to the casting 4. This bracket 62 is provided with a tubular hardened die 63 through which the wire 7 is forced and adjacent thel outer eXitrend of which the wire portion 7 is severed from the main body of the wire. The knife 61 is operated either manually or by a treadle in the following manner. strap 69 is pivotally secured at one end tothe spring-controlled treadle proper 70, this strap at its upper end being adjustably secu-red by means of a guide 67 and a set screw 68 to a link 65 which is bent at one end to pass around one side face of the knife 61 and cooperates with a second link or strap member 66 to form a U-shaped holder for the knife 61.
