I This invention relates to improvements in machines for bending bars. 7
It is the primary object of the present 1nvention to provide amachine for forming angular bends in bars.
further obj ect of the invention is to provide a machine of the class described which ma be either manually or motor operated.
X further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the class described in which vide a machine of the classdescribed which will accommodate bars of varying thicknesses. r i A further object of the inventionis to provide a machine for bending bars which is of very simple constructiomis strong and durable, is easily operated, and iswell adapted for the purpose described. 3
With the above'and other objects in View the invention consists of the improved ma chine forbendingbars, and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings it'will appear that the numeral 8 indicates the fiat base of the machine which is adapted to be stationed upon a' suit-able table or support. The base 8 is formed with three aligned bearing portions 9, 10, and 11 in which are journaled upstanding stud and 16. respectively, both of the same diam eter, while the" intermediate shaft 13, carries a smaller intermediate gear 17 in mesh with both of the gears and 16.
A right angular lever 18 is, mounted at its intermediate point on the upwardly extending reduced portion 12of the shaft 12 and said lever is also pinned to the gear 15 so that the two will operate together. A straight lever 19 is mounted atone end portion on the shaft 14: and said'lever is pinned to the gear 16 to; operate therewith. The outer end portion of said lever '19 is pivotally connected with one end portion of a third lever 20, which ispivotally connected at its othermend portion with the adjacent end portion of the right angular lever 18' by means of a pin 26.
.It will be noted that the. end portions of the levers 18 and 19 are formed with a plurality of apertures 21 and 22 by which means the pivotal connections for the lever may be adjusted with respect to the ends of the-levers 18 and 19 for a purpose hereinafter to be explained.
The lever 20 is formed with an upstanding;
portion 23 forming a guide and support and against the vertical face 24 of which a bar.

The lever 18 is formed with an upstanding portion 28 against the face of which a portion of thebar 25 rests and the bar is also engaged between the reduced shaft portion 12 and a roller or pin 29 mounted one block 30 adjustably held on the face of the lever 18, providingmeans for the accommodation of bans of diflerent thicknesses, Q
A platform member 31 is built up on the lower left hand corner of the base member 8,
' in Fig. 1 and the planeof the same on a level with the supporting surfaces of the members 18 and 20. Said platform is adapted to support the inner end portion of the bar to be bent. A pivotal cam member 32 is positioned at the inner portion of the platform to bear against the bar 25 and to prevent it from bowing when bent. Apertures 33 are also formed in the platform for the reception of a guide or gauge pin 34.
Fig. 1 illustrates the parts of the machine in normal position and the bar 25 is placed as shown. Bars of different diameters or thicknesses may be accommodated by adjusting the block and substituting for the pins 26 and 34, pins of a larger or smaller diameter, as the case may be. -To operate the machine, power may be applied. to any of the gears or levers, either manually. or by motor, to move the large gears and levers in a clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 2. This will result inthe bar being bent in two places, with each movement of levers as shown, and the angularity and extent of the bends is controlled by the distance the levers are turned. If the bar is of such a length that more bent are required it is removed and the remaining straight portion re-positioned for successive operations. lhe spaced apertures 21 and 22 permit the insertion of the pivot pins for the lever 20 in any corresponding pair ofa 'aertures to vary the disposition of the lever 20 with respect to the end portions of the levers18 and 19. From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved machine "for bending bars is 01": very simple and novel construction,
[and is well adapted for the purposes set forth.
What I claim as my invention is: j
1. A machine for bending bars, compris ing a base, a pair of connected gears revolubly mounted on the base, a lever secured to each of said gears, an intermediate lever pivotally connected with each of said first mentioned levers, the intermediate lever and one of theother levers being formed with guide [means to receive a bar, and means on said levers to engage a bar at intermediate points to bend said bar at said engaged points when said levers''are moved from normal position.
2. A machine for bending bars, comprising a base, a pair of connected gears revolubly mounted 011 the base, a lever secured to each of said gears, an intermediate lever pivotally connected with each of said first menmeans to receive a bar, a brace for an outer portion of a bar on the intermediate lever,
a bracetoran opposite outer-portion of a bar on the base, and means on said levers for bendingly engaging intermediate portions of a bar, the relative positions of said means being changed whenfthe levers are moved.
3. A machine. for bending bars, comprising a base, a pair of connected gears revolubly mounted on the base, a lever secured to each of the gears, an intermediate lever adjustably pivotally connected with each of said first mentioned levers, the intermediate lever and on of the other levers being formed with adjustable guide means to receive a bar, a brace for an outer portion of a bar on the intermediate lever, a brace for an opposite outer portion of a baron the base, and means for operating the levers to changetherelative positions of said guide means whereby bends are formed ina'bar. y

A machine for bending bars, comprising a base, a pair of gears revolubly mounted. thereon, an intermediate gear in mesh with each of thefirst mentioned gears, a bend ing lever carried by one of said first mentioned gears, 'a lever carried by the otherot said gears, an intermediate lever pivotally connected with each of said other levers, and bar engaging means on the base, the bending lever, i

5. A machine for bending bars, comprising a base, a pair of gears revolubly mounted thereon, an intermediat'e'gear in meshwith each of the first mentioned gears, a bending lever secured to one ofthe first mentioned gears, a lever secured to'the other of said gears, an intermediate lever adjustably piv-' otally connected with each of said other levers, the intermediate lever and the bending lever being provided with adjustable bar means on said base, all of said bar engaging means normally being in alinement, V and means for simultaneously moving said levers whereby the bar engaging means are angularly disposed with respect to each other to bend a bar engaged thereby.
