To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK P. Dav es, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Flask Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dental flask presses, such as are employed in theproduction of false sets of teeth, and has for its purpose to increase the efficiency of such devices. One of the last steps in the process consists in filling the vacant space in a mold or flask which contains the teeth, with rubber, which, upon being vulcanized, comprises the plate, or foundation, in which the teeth are firmly imbedded. In this operation the parts of the flask are secured in a frame, and the requisite amount of pressure applied thereto, to tightly compress the rubher. The frame is usually formed of cast metal, and is frequently broken by the force applied to the flasks contained therein.
One of the objects of the resent invention is to provide a frame which can be rigidly secured in place on a bench or other fixture, and which can be subjected to an ordi nary amount of pressure from within without danger of breakage thereof.
Another purpose of the invention is to subject the contents of a flask to a gradually increasing force, which is found to bring the rubber in the flask into a better state for the vulcanizing operation, than when the force is applied more abruptly thereto.
In the production of false sets of teeth it is customary to make use of three flasks at a time, which flasks are later assembled in a frame, and placed in a vulcanizing furnace, which is usually of suitable dimensions to receive three of said flasks at one time. As shown in the drawings and set forth herein, a press is provided which will contain three of said flasks at a time, for independent operation thereon, and the device is preferably made in this form, on account of the lessened cost of production, and greater convenience in use. The press is divided into three sections, each comprising a unitary part thereof, and each designed to receive one of the flasks for that part of the operation hereinbefore mentioned. A frame with any desired number of sections may be formed, however.
'The above mentioned, and other features andadvantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. lfshows the invention in side elevation, with one part thereof in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The device comprises a base-plate 1, mounted above which is a similar plate 2,
held in spaced relation with the plate 1 by means of bolts 3, arranged inpairs, and provided on their upper endswith threaded portions 4, on which are operable nuts 5, having a bearing against the lower face of the plate 2, and nuts 6 on the upper side thereof. The bolts 3 are also fitted with lock-nuts 7, by means of which the nuts 5 can be held from turning. The lower ends of the bolts are also threaded to receive nuts 8, which are turned downwardly against the plate 1, and assist in maintaining the proper spacing between the plates 1 and 2.
The bolts 3-are also preferably formed of sufficient length to pass downwardly through openings in a bench top 9, beneath which they are provided with nuts 10 and lock-nuts 11. By this means the frame is held rigidly in place, and prevented from tipping to one side or the other when pressure is being brought to bear on the flasks contained in the machine.
Fitted to operate in threaded openings in the plate 2 are screws 12, beneath which are stationed the usual flasks 13, formed of two or more separable parts. Interposed between the lower end of each of the screws 12 and the flask below the same is a tension device, comprising a pair of cylindrical blocks 14 and 15, rovided in their adjacent faces with reces cs 16 and 17. to receive the ends of a coiled spring 18. The downward movement of the screw operates to compress said spring, permitting the upper block to move downwardly in the direction of the lower one. The proper relative position of said blocks is maintained by means of guide pins 19, fixed at their lower ends in the blocks 15, and having free play in openings 20 in the blocks 14. The upper ends of the screws 12 are fitted with heads to receive a wrench or other tool, as shown at 21, by means of which said screws can be operated. I,
YJhen the flask is first provided with a quantity of the rubber, the parts of the flask will be separated somewhat thereby, but as said parts are brought under compression the flask sections will gradually close, and the rubber be packed into a compact form therein, between the plaster of Paris fillings or" said flask. By the use of the blocks 14 the parts of the flask are brought tightly together. This yieldable .action also tends to prevent any breakage of the parts. In case or any injury to the threads on the bolts 3,
i such bolts can be easily replaced.
The threaded portions of the bolts 3 are of suflicient length to permit a considerable adjustment inthe spacing of the plates 1 and 2, so that the same may be changed to meet the requirements of different sizes of 7 flasks, or other variations in the work to be I performed. A considerable saving in the bolts and other parts of the machine is effectedvby having the same constructed in the triple form shown herein, and practically all of the parts of said machine are such as can be readily found in stock, greatly re ducing the cost of production thereof.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination with a frame, and compression screw therein, va tension device, adapted to be interposed between said screw and a flask contained in said frame, comprising a pair of spaced blocks and'extensible spring centrally thereof, one of said blocks being fitted with guide-ways and the other block with pins slidable therein.
