new and useful Improvements in Cable- Splicing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
' his invention relates in general to Vises and more particularl to a vise for use in splicing or making oops in cables. Considerable dificulty and loss of time has been experienced in splicing or making loops in cables by reason of the dificulty 1n hold ng such a device in suiiiciently rigid position to enable the operation to be carefully and quickly carried out. v
It is an object of my invention to pro.- vide a vise for retaining the cable rigidly in position during the process of splicing or loop making. As a further ob ect of my invention I provide a cable v1sc which shall be readily clamped into position and which is provided wlth suitable adjusting means for the reception and handling of thimbles and loops of various sizes. The other objects of my invention will appear in the accompanying specification and claims and will be disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my device; 7

Referring with greater partlcularly to the I drawings, 1 is the base plate which may be as screws inserts secured to the work bench or to any other suitable stand by an suitable means, such d throu h holes 2. The vise itself is comprised 0 two levers 3 rotatably mounted on the base plate 1 b means of stud bolts 4 or any other suc mounting means. These levers. are provided with arcuate gripping jaws 5.
A slotted backing p the base plate 1 centrally between the two bolts 4, a locking screw 7 is provided to retain the backing plate in any desired position. This locking screw has a portion of such diameter as to permit it to pass snugly through the longitudinally extending slot 11 in the backing plate and is further provided at its lower end with a screw-threaded ate 6 is mounted on guide screw 12 of a diameter such as to cause it to fit very snugly in the slot 11 of the backing plate, is provided. The purpose of this screw is to keep the-backing plate in longitudinal alignment with the opening between the jaws 5; The two members 12 and 7 determine the alignment of the backing plate. At 13 and 14 there are provided two arcuate shaped recesses in the backing plate of different sizes to provide for the reception of cables and loops of varying sizes. At the opposite end of the base plate 1 there is mounted the actuating means for the vise. This actuating means is comprised primarily of a cam 15 rotatably' mounted in the base plate 1 by means of the locking screw 16. This locking screw 16 has a screw-threaded portion 17 adapted to engage with a screw-threaded recess in the base plate 1. It also has a shoulder portion 16 adapted to bear on the cam for the purpose of looking it in any desired position, and an operating handle 19 secured by means of screws 20 to the cam 15 for the purpose of moving the cam into the desired position for closing the jaws of the vise in grippin the cable or loo s. A spring 21 is provide approximately midlength of the levers 3 of the visewhich tends normally to keep the jaws of the vise open against the action of the cam 15. The base plate is rst placed upon a suitable work bench and the backing plate 3 is placed with the desired arcuate surface facing in the direction of the jaws 5. The backing plate is then moved longitudinally forward or aft until in exactly the proper position with reference to the loop in connection with.which it vis being used. It is then looked rigidly in position by rotation of the lockingscrew 7. When it is desired to clamp the jaws 5 on to the cable it is necessary only to give the handle 19 a turn to one side the cam 15 acting upon tld lid
