Be it known that I, ROBERT R. RUsr, a citizen of the United States, a resident of the a city of New York, county of Queens, and
State of New York, have invented new and a metal plate; andFigs. 4 and are details of the pulling element.
My invention relates to apparatus for twisting metal, such as plates, bars or rods,
and comprises a pulling element by which the metal may be drawn through a twisting mechanism and twisted or distorted into the desired conformation. My invention also consists in the features which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, the twisting mechanism A which I prefer to employ, consists in a air of rolls 2 which I have shown to be arranged on vertical axes, and a second pair of rolls 3 in advance of the rolls 2, which are rotatable through an angle of 20 to 30 degrees from the vertical about a horizontal axis.
The pullin mechanism B comprises a pair of parafiel link belts 5 mounted on sprockets 6 secured on and driven by the shafting 7 5 from any suitable source of power, such as C, and the pulling device 8, which consists in a base 9 bolted across the link belts 5, a pair of standards 10 mounted on the base 9, and a support 11 pivoted on trunnions 12 which are positioned in the standards 10. The support 11 carries a rotatable T-shaped bolt 13 upon the outer end of which is secured ahook 14' and between the shoulder 15 and the support 11 is a spring 16 which holds the head 17 of the bolt 13 against the roller bearings 18 in the support 11. The springs 19 which are mounted on the trunnions 12, bear against the base 9, at their inner ends and at their outer ends against the arms 20 of the support 11 and thereby serve to return the support 11 and with it the bolt 13 to normal position, against the stop 21 on the base 9, at right angles to the link belts 5 when the hooks 14 are not engaged.
In operation the metal to be twisted, which I have shown in the form of a flat steel plate D, is cut into suitable lengths, punched at 22, and is fed into the rolls 2 and 3 both" of which at first-are arranged with'vertical axes. As the plate advances, the rollers 3 are rotated by the operator until their axes are at an angle usually from 20 to 30 degrees from the horizontal and are locked in that position by the operator and remain in that posltion until the plate has passed therethrough. By so manipulating the rollers'3 any desired degree of twist may be given to the plate. When the-plate projects in front of the rolls 3,=one of'the hooks 14 of the pulling device 8 engages the eye 22 on the plate and pulls it forwardly through the rollers 2 and 3, andsupport 11 at the same time rotates about the trunnions 12 untilits v axis is parallelwith the line of pull, as. is shown in Fig. 2. As the bolt 13 isalso free to revolve upon the roller bearings 18 on m port 11, it rotates with the'plate. D: as. the plate is twisted by the rolls:2 and'3. NVhen the metal has been pulled through the rolls 2 and 3, its weight is suflicient to cause the hook 14 to rotate into a downwardly facing position and therebypermitthe strip D to drop free from the hook 14 and the pressure of the springs 19 against the arms restores the bolt 13 to normal position against the stop 21.
The depending projection 21 on the bottom of the bolt 13 has a bearing face for engagement against a correspondingly shaped bearing face on the stop 21. These faces may be fiat or of suitablecomplementary shape. After the strip D has dropped off the hook 14, leaving it in a downwardly facing position, the springs 19 force the projection 21 back against the stop 21, and if the bearing faces of the stop and projection are not then in bearing the pressure of the springs 19 will-cause the bolt to rotate until the bolt 13 and hook 14' assume the normal position shown on the upper-l side of Fig. 2 and in Figs. 4 and 5, in which these faces are shown in parallel. In this position the support 11 and bolt 13 are carried around by the link belts into the position shown in Fig. 3, with the hook in position to engage the aperture 22 in a succeeding plate. 7
I have found that my invention is very effective and of great utility in pulling metal 5 strips, bars or plates through twisting machines.
