Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 15522.
To all who's/tit may (ion-coin:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. Howe, a citizen of the United States, and. a resident oi? llirlington in the county of Lafayette and. State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useiful Dental PlasticFilling Compressor, oil which the following is a specilication.
My invention is a plastic filling compressor for use by dentists and its principal object is to provide a device of this character which will press the filling against all of the walls of a tooth cavity at the same time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plastic filling compressor which may he quickly brought intouse to pack or tone the filling throughout the entire cavity immediately after the filling has been placed in the cavity.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a dental instrument of this character which can be utilized to compress the filling in any of the anterior surfaces of the 'lrontteeth and those adjacent thereto.
ll ith the precedingand other objects and advantages in mind the invention consists in the novel constructions and arrangement of parts and operations to be hereinafter explicitly referred to claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective of the device in use;
Figure 2 is a perspective of the compressor detached from its handle;
I Figure 3 is a similar view showing the front face of the compressor;
Figure is a fragmentary view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation, and
Figure 5 is a similar view showing the compressor in horizontal section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote lilre parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a concave-convex con1- pressor member which is fashioned from relatively thin metal. As shown in the drawing, this member 5 is shaped to conform to the contour of the gingival half of the bicuspid and anterior teeth. It is ohvious, however, that this member may be made to conform to any oi? the other teeth and in various sizes to accommodate various sized teeth.
Extending horizontally "from the cOliVOX surface of the compressor member 5, adjacent the center thereof, is a pair of horizontally disposed wires 6 having their ends twisted together to provide a shank 7;
A. tool holder is designated at 8 having a bifurcated end 9 adapted to receive the shank 7. A conical nut 10 is threaded on the bifurcated end S of the tool holder 8 to hold the shank rigid with the holder.
In the use of the instrument the cavity is first filled in the usual manner. The instrument is then placed'with the compressor member 5 embracing the anterior surface of the tooth and tightly held against the filling material Suflicient pressure is applied to the member 5 as to distribute the filling over the entire surface of the cavity and against all of the walls of the same. The instrument is held in this position until the filling eras set sufficiently to prevent the filling being disturbed in the withdrawal or the instrument. v i p In connection with the compressor member 5 I wish to emphasize that it is con structed of such metal as will permit bending of the same'with an instrument to lit the surface of the particular tooth.
it is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope v of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent oi the United States, 13 I l. A dental filling compressor including a member shaped to conform to the anterior contour of a tooth and a handle carried thereby tor holding the member tightly against the tooth and filling.
2. A dental instrument comprising a c0ncave-convex member to embrace the anterior surface of a tooth and adapted to be held with pressure against the plastic filling in the tooth.
