Description

w. A. McCARTER. DENTAL EXPANSION ARCH.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 2,1921.
1 95,922. -Patented Nov. 1, 1921-.
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFEQ DENTAL EXPANSION-ARCH.
To all w ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MoCAR'rEn, a citizen of the United States of Amerlca, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Expansion-Arches, of which the followlng is a specification.
This invention relates to a dental expansion arch band and more particularly to improved means for engaging the ends thereof with fixed anchorageswhile permitting expansion of said arch band.
Further objects and advantages of the 1nvention will be set forth in the detailed description which follows.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the application of the parts to a row of teeth;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the outer casings constituting the fixed anchorages of the arch band;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the inner casings which are adapted to have interlocking engagement with the outer casings; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the inner and outer casings showing them in interlocking engagement with each other.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing. 1
Expansion arch bands are in common use by Orthodontists and are used for the correction of irregular teeeth. Some of these arch bands are in the form of a bar and others rear corners and are notched at their lower forward corners as indicated at 11. These inner casings are adapted to enter and be engaged in outer casings 12. The casings 12 are secured to bands 13 adapted to embrace the teeth 14 in the usual and well known way and to constitute anchorages for the casings 12. The bottoms of the casings 12 are closed, as indicated at 14 but the tops of s in a 11 a it il itsi We l- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 2, 1921.
Serial No. 458,080.
said casings extend upwardly for only a Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
very short distance, the remainder of the I front of said'casings being open. Thus the inner casings 8 may be slipped into the outer casings 12 with a lateral movement and may then be thrust downwardly therein, to cause the notched portions 11 of the inner casings to engage behind the short front wall 15 of the outer casings and to cause the hooks 10 to engage over the upper edges of the rear walls of the outer casings.
It is manifest that by screwing outwardly upon the jack screws the arch band will be expanded and that the inner and outer casings at this time complementally constitute a firm anchorage for the ends of the wire or bar which constitutes the arch band. By screwing inwardly upon the jack screws the pressure upon the arch band may be quickly relieved and the arch band as a whole may be bodily removed, along with the inner casings, from the outer casings, by moving the inner casings forwardly and then laterally, to disengage the hooks 10 from the rear walls of the outer casings and to disengage the notch portions 11 from the front walls 15 of said outer casings. p From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efiicient means are herein provided for carrying out theobjects of the invention. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims- Having described my invention, what I claim 1s:
1. A device of the character described to a fixed anchorage upon a tooth, an arch band, an extensible element engageable with .an end of said arch band, a casing carrying 'Sfild extensible element and lnterengaging members upon said casing, and the first named member engageable with each other, when said casing is moved laterally and then longitudinally with respect to said member.
2. A device of the character described comprising an outer casing, means for securing the same to a tooth, an inner casing, a jack screw carried by the inner casing, said jack screw being recessed for the reception of the end of a wire and means for locking the inner casing to the outer casing.
musty-r9 fi leeited claim wherg in said locking means comprises a hook upon the inner casing adapted to engage over a Wall of the outer casing. V
4:. A device of the character described comprising an outer casing having an open top and an open front throughout the major portion of its length but closed across its front for a short distance from the bottom, in combination With an inner casing adapted to fitbehind the closed front portion of the outer casing, said inner casing having a hook upon its rear Wall adapted to engage over the upper edge of the rear Wall of the outer casing, a jacksorew threaded into the inner casing and having a bore formed 1ongitudinally therein and an arch band having a smooth end adapted to enter the bore of the jack screw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
