IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,346, dated January 28, 1873.
To all whomt may concern:
Be it known that we, JONATHAN KOLB and ALBERT KOLB, both of Oxford, in the county of Benton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Door Stops and Holders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a horizontal section of a door and aportion of wall with my devices attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the wall, showing the fastening devices and stop in operation.
This invention has for its object to provide for doors and shutters a stop and retaining device which'will serve to keep them in place when thrown back against the wall, and which at the same time will be sufficient-ly yielding to permit a disconnection upon pulling the door or shutter with slight effort. It consists of three different kinds of springs in connection with a projecting stud or stop, all constructed and arranged as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates an ordinary door or shutter, and B indicates the wall to which it is hinged. G represents the stud or stop, which is secured either in the wainscot opposite the lower portion of the door or shutter. or in the wall Oppo-A site the upper part thereof. This stop is perforated horizontally and centrally to receive a cushion, D, of rubber or other soft elastic substance, which projects somewhat from the stud, and serves to form a buffer to deaden the noise of the door in striking, and at the same time acts as a spring, pressing apart the couplin g-springs,
hereafter described, and thus insuring a close connection of the latter and obviating all rattling vibration. E indicates a flat or ribbon spring, bent into angular form at about its middle portion, and secured to the stud G by means of screws or other devices at its ends in such a manner that its middle portion will be raised or separated from the surface ofthe stud, by which arrangement sufficient elastic ity is secured to prevent undue wear, and sufficient firmness at the angle to hold the loop of the spring F. This loop-spring is of wire, and consists of a squared or rectangular loop, c, with spiral arms I), terminating in small loops or eyes c for the passage of the fastening-screws. The loop-spring is attached to the door in such a manner that when the door is pushed back its loop c will pass over the angle of the spring E. An engagement is thus effected without noise between the two spring couplings, which cannot rattle during their contact on account of the cushion-spring in the stud. At the same time the slightest effort in pulling the door from the wall will cause the ribbon-spring to give for the release of the loop-spring, freeing the door from the fastening.
YV hat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the stop G and cushion D, of the bent ribbon spring E and the loop-spring F, substantially as specified.
ln testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
