HENRY H. NEWBY, or SAN QUENTIN, camroni na SURF-BOARD,
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 14, 1e17, Serial No. 207,131. Renewed May 10, 1919. seat-1 m. 296,056."v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Quentin, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surf-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a surf board which is in the nature of a catamaran through the use of which the pleasure de- Y Y rived from surf boating and bathing-may not only be materially increased but such boating and bathing rendered safe to inexperienced persons. a
The primary object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive device of this character wherein provision is not only made for permitting the person using the device to propel himself over the surface of the water, but to so construct the device that the person lying thereon may freely use'his feet and legs for controlling the direction of travel of the board.
Another object of the invention is to provide the board with a propeller which has associated therewith mechanism of novel construction through the operation of which the propeller may be set in motion to cause the board to travel over the surface of the water. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein a plurality of floats are attached to a board which is recessed upon opposite sides'adjacent one end of the board in such a manner that a person lyingv thereon may have free use of his or her feet and legs for the steering of the board over the surface of the water.
A further object of the invention is to provide hangers of novel construction for the propeller operating mechanism associated therewith.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim. Y
Y The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise detalls of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
, 3 is an end view of the board; i v
V Fig. 4 1s a vertical transverse section. on a the-line 4-4 of "Fig. 1. Y
Like characters of reference denote'corre sponding parts throughout the several views 1n the drawing. 1
Referring nowto the drawings when constructed in accordance with the invention includes a plurality of floats 5 which are preferably arranged in/p'airs and with forcement therefor;
A board 10 rests upon the ribs 9 of the floats 7 and has secured to the sides thereof the ribs 9 upon the floats 6 which are of greater length than the floats'7. Secured to the bottom of the board 10 are transversely extending plates 11 on which are formed spaced ears 12 arranged in pairs with each pair of ears having passed therebetween a rib on one of the floats 7 to which the ears are secured in a suitable manner. One of the plates 11 which is arranged in advance of the floats has connected therewith and with the floats 6 struts 13 by means of which the portions of the floats 6 which extend beyond the floats are braced.
The board 10 is cut away upon opposite sides adjacent the rear end thereof to provide recesses 14, so that a person lying upon the board 10 may allow his feet to extend into the water for guiding the board 10. It will be noted with reference to Fig. 1 in the drawing that the shape of the recesses 14 are such that the person can freely move his legs for the purpose stated and that the recesses provide the board 10 at its rear end with an extension 15 upon which'the feet may be placed when not employed in guidingthe board 10. Extending longitudinally Patented Dec. 9, 1919,. 5
in detail I the letter A designates a surf board which of the board 10 between the recesses 14. and the forward end of the boardare hand rails 16 which have connected therewith straps 17 by means of which the person employing the device may strap himself thereto if desired, it of course being understood that the hand rails 16 also serve as means by which the board may be carried from place i to place and to which a person may hold when launching the board or when coasting on the waves. If desired a pneumatic cushion may be mounted upon the board 10 adcomprising a part of the frame 18 is a propeller shaft 20 to one end of which is fixed a propeller 21. The other end of the shaft 20 has fixed thereto a pinion 22 which is engaged by the teeth on the gear wheel 23 fixed to a shaft 24. mounted to turn in hangers 25 on the board 10.
The shaft 24: has fixed thereto a pair of ratchet wheels 26 and has mounted to turn thereon a pair of arms 27 which are arranged adjacent the wheels 26 and with each arm having fixed thereto a dog 28 which is yieldably held in engagement with the teeth on a ratchet- Wheel 26 by a spring 29. Each of the arms 27 is pivotally connected with one end of a link 29 the opposite end of which is pivotally connected with the lower end of the lever 30 which extends above the board 10 through a slot 81 therein and is suitably mounted for swinging movement in boxings 32, on the board.
Through the provision of the levers 30 it will be apparent with reference to the draw.- ing that when the levers are swung by a person lying upon the board 10 the rotation of the shaft 20 may be accomplished for the propulsion by the propeller of the board 10 over the surface of the water, while the occupant of the board may steer the same in any direction desired by letting one of his feet hang Within the water upon which the board is supported.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is apparent thata surf board has been provided which though inexpensive of construction is capable of rendering surf bathing comparatively safe and enjoyable for inexperienced persons.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
A device of the class described comprising a board, propelling means carried thereby, transversely extending plates on the bottom of said board a pair of spaced floats, ears on said plates, ribs on said floats passing be tween and fixed to said ears, and other floats of greater length than the firstqnentioned floats having ribs thereonfixed to said board at opposite sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
