To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES H. OTTO and EDWARD C. YOUNG, citizens of the United States, residing at Beeler and Wallace, re.- spectively, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Gutters, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved tobacco cutter, and an ob] ect of the invention is to provide an improved device of this kind, which is very simple and eliicientin construction, exceedingly useful in practice, and owing to its simplicity may be manu`- factured for a small cost and sold at a reasonable profit. u

The invention further aims to provide a tobacco cutter including a base having a chamber for water or the like, upstanding opposite n guides, a severing member mounted in the guides including actuating means therefor, `whereby as the severing member is lowered, in the act of cutting a: piece of `plug tobacco or the like, the severing element partially enters the chamber, inorder to be dampened by the water therein.

rIhe invention further aims .to provide wipers consisting of rubber or a composition of rubber and canvas upon opposite sides of an opening through which the severing element passes,` for wiping the opposite faces of the severing element, when its cutting edge portion and the opposite faces adjoining thereto are withdrawn from the chamber, for wiping the opposite faces of the severing element and removing the gunrrny substance thereon. i

The invention further aims to provide means for holding or clampingthese opposite wiping jaws to the upper portion of the wall of the chamber formed in the base, said means being of such construction as to permit it to be removed for repairing or renewing the wipingj'aws.

The invention further aims to provide a filling opening, through -which the water may be poured into the chamber. "It is obvious that if` desired oneof the wiping jaws may be removed whereby the water may be poured into the chamber.

While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferablait is obvious that as a resultof al redt-lation of the invention: to" a more prac-a tical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within` the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features "and `combinati-on of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown 1n the drawings and claimed.`

Wiping jaws 14: are mounted upon the upper surfaces of the longitudinal walls of the chamber. These wiping jaws may in the present instance be constructed of rubber or a composition of rubber and canvas, particularly the canvas and rubber. The adjacent edge portions of the wiping jaws are positioned between the standards 5, so that the notches 15 may engage the standards. However, these edge portions are spaced to provide the wiping jaws proper 16, and yowingto these jaws being spaced a slot 17 is provided, through which the severing element or knife passes on its downward movement. kBy meansv of sheet metal plates 18, provided with apertures 19 for the reception of fastening screws or the like, the wiping jaws are secured to the walls of the chamber. These plates are detachably fastened in position, so that one or the other may be removed to permit of repairs, and also for cleaning the chamber, which becomes more or less guinmy. Carried by one of the standards in any suitable manner is a filling funnel 20, the lower end of which has a passage of communication 21 with the chamber, so that water may be allowed to enter the chamber. It is obvious that in order to fasten one of the members (constituting one of the wiping jaws) to the wall of the chamber, the wiping jaw and the plate for securing it in place are provided with cutaway portionspto engage about the lower end of the filling funnel.

It is to be observed that the severing ele.- ment or knife is loosely mounted in its guide channels, so that when the severing element or Aknife is on its downward stroke, it bej comes tilted angularly in its guides, so as to cause the lower severing edge of the knife to assume an acute angle to the securing plates, as the lower cutting edge approaches the plug of tobacco, so as to insure a shearing action on the plug, thereby more efiiciently cutting the tobacco, without leaving a rough edge, or without tearing the plug, or mashing the same adjacent the out. Owing to the lever 11 being pivoted at 12, to one side of the center of the frame of the cutter, as shown in Fig. 1, and sincethe pivotal connection between theflug (which projects at right angles to the lever 11 and downwardly) and the upwardly 4protruding eX- tension 8, moves in an arcufate'path whose center is the pivot 12, and by virtue of the loose mounting of the lmife, the knife assumes a tilting action within its guides, during its vertical movements. For instance, when the. lever 11 is swung upwardly, the pivotal j connection between the eX- the guides,

tension 8 and the lug 13 will lnove from the vertical center of the frame, that is laterally to one side of the vertical center of the frame, causing the knife to tilt in its guides, and this tilting action is capable of being performed, owing to the loose mounting of the knife in the guides. 1When the knife tilts in this manner, particularly on its downward stroke the cutting edge has a shearing action on the plug of tobacco,

thereby more elliciently cutting the tobacco without leaving a rough edge, or without tearing the plug, or meshing the same adjacent the cut.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is.

1. In a tobacco cutter, the combination with a. base provided with a chambered enlargement, the chamber of which being adapted to receive water or the like, guides rising upwardly from the end walls of the chamber, .members secured to the upper faces of the longitudinal walls of the chainber and having spaced wiping` jaws, thereby providing a slot for the reception of a severing member, a severing memberloosely mounted in the guides, the sharpened portion thereof adapted to enter the slot, whereby the opposite faces of the member may be wiped by the wiping jaws, side plates secured to and spaced by the upright guides, and a lever pivoted between the side plates, said lever having means extending at right angles to the lever and having a pivotal connection with the member, said pivotal connection adapted to swing in an arcuate path concentric with the pivot of the lever, whereby, as the lever is moved to lower the member, the member will be tilted, during its shearing action on the plug.

2. In a tobacco cutter, the combination with a base provided with a chambered enlargement, of guides rising upwardly from the end walls of the chambered enlargement,

a tobacco cutting knife loosely mounted in the guides, members secured to the upper faces of the longitudinal side walls of the chamber and having their adj acont edge portions spaced to provide a slot, said edge portions constituting wiping jaws, engageablc with the opposite faces of the knife, which passes through the slot on its downward stroke, for wiping the opposite faces thereof, opposed spaced plates secured to the upper parts of the guides, a lever pivotally mounted between the plates, a connection between the lever and the knife, said connection being movable in an arcuate path concentric with the pivot of the lever, whereby it may move laterally from the vertical center of the plates, so as to tilt the knife loosely in as it is lowered, thereby causing the cutting edge of the knife to assume an acute angle to the wiping jaws, during its shearing action on the tobacco.

3. In a tobacco cutter, the combination with a chambered body having upstanding grooved guides, plates secured to the upper face of the chambered body and having members extending between the guides and spaced to form a slot7 members secured between said plates and the body and having their adjacent edges protruded beyond the adjacent parts of the plates, thereby constituting wiping jaws, between which a cutting knife may pass, a knife blade loosely mounted in the guide, a lever pivotally mounted to one side of the center of the plates, a pivotal connection between the lever and the knife, adapted to move away from the vertical center of the plates in an arcuate path concentric with the pivot of the lever, thereby causing the knife totilt in its guides, causing the cutting edge of the knife to assume an acute angle to the wiping j aws, during the shearing action of the cutting edge.

4. In a tobacco cutter, the combination with a body having a water receiving chamber, said chamber having a water entrance copies of this patent may be obtained for funnel, of upright parallel guides on the body, a knife loosely mounted in the guides, spaced wiping jaws formin a slot through which the cutting edge of t e knife passes, means for securing the jaws to the body, spaced elements on the guides, a lever having a pivotal connection between the elements, to one side of the vertical center of the elements, said lever having a lug extending laterally and a pivotal connection between the knife and the lug adapted to `rnove laterally from the vertical center of the elements and in an arcuate path concentric with the pivot of the lever, thereby tilting the knife, so that its lower edge will assume an acute angle to the wiping aws during the shearing action on the tobacco.
