' SURGICAL APPLIANCE. APPLICATION FILED DEC. L5. 1915- 1,240,125. Patented Sept. 11, 1917.

SURGICAL APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters latent. I Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
- Application filed December 15, 1915. Serial No. 66,973.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN M. DOUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gillette, in the county of Campbell and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surgical Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a surgical appliance which may be employed to apply medicament to the lining of the urethra or as a receptacle for the discharge therefrom in certain forms of urethritis.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an appliance which may be retained in applied position to receive the discharge without employing the fore skin for this purpose and has its attaching portion so constructed as to positively prevent the dis charge collecting in the urethra and setting up a posterior urethritis.
Another object of the invention is to provide an appliance in which a hollow cylindrical extension for insertion within the fossa navicularis is connected with the receptacle for the discharge by a restricted neck forming exteriorly of the appliance an annular groove the wall of which is to be gripped by the meatus to retain the appliance in applied position.
A further object of the invention is to provide the appliance with an extension, the wall of which is of greater thickness throughout its length than the thickness of the wall of the neck or receptacle to prevent the erectile tissue of the glans penis when distended from restricting the channel through the extension.
With these and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, al-
terations, and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of the appliance.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the letter Adesignates a surgical appliance constructed in accordance with the invention wherein a substantially globular shaped sack or pouch 1, preferably formed from some thin and flexible material, such as silk, or rubber, and adapted to receive the discharge, is provided at one side with a reduced neck 2, forming exteriorly of the appliance, an annular groove at one end of a hollow cylindrical extension 3 having a rounded edge at its outer end and connected with the sack by the neck. Said extension is adapted to be inserted in fossa navicularis and is preferably of a length corre sponding thereto, so that the meatus may extend within the groove and engage the wall thereof to retain the appliance in applied position. The wall of, the extension is of greater thickness throughout its length than the wall of the neck of the sack to prevent blood pressure in the cavernous portion of the penis from collapsing the extension and closing the channel through the neck thereby resulting in the discharge collecting and setting up a posterior urethritis.
lVhen applied, the extension 3 is slipped into the fossa navicularis where it is frictionally retained by the engagement of the flesh with the wall of the groove and with the sack 1 lying beyond the end of the urethra. The sack 1 may contain a medicament which when the sack is pressed may be injected along the urethra, or the appliance may be applied and serve as a receptacle for catching any discharge that may be emitted from the urethra and thus protect the clothing of the person to whom the device is applied and prevent the spreading of disease.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
A surgical appliance comprising a flexible globular sack, a neck on said sack providinga circumferentially extending groove exteriorly of the appliance to receive-therein the Ineatus, a hollow cylindrical extension connected at its innerend with the sack by said neck and having a rounded edge at its outer end, the Wall of said extension being 10 of greater thickness than the Wall of the neck and sack for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
