To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HAaoLn Moonoaor'r, a subject of the King of England, residin at New York, in the county and State 0 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saggars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. I

This invention relates to saggars or receptacles for holding articles of earthenware or pottery in a kiln for firing, and is especially designed for holding ceramic mosaic and similar small tiles.

One object of the invention is to facilitate the placing of the ware into the saggars, while other objects are to economize space and heat taken up in the kiln.

The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute a part of this specification, and then more specifically delined in the claims at the end of the description.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to 6.68- ignate corresponding parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the containers made in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a group of these containers or saggars assembled as they are laced in a kiln, and Fig. 8 is a vertical section through two la ers of saggars, showin how the ottom 0 each container forms t 0 top of the one immediately below it when said containers or saggars are built up in layers in the kiln as is well understood by those skilled in this art.

My improved saggar is made of fire-clay or like material suitable for tiles, ottery and other articles manufactured whic require to be fired or burnt in containers through kilns, and instead of being provided with four walls, as has been common heretofore, it is formed with a bottom 1, only one side wall 2 and only one end wall 3. When these containers are assembled in the usual manner,

as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the walls 2 and 3 of each container form the other two walls of adjacent containers, and the bottom of each of said containers also constitutes the top of the container immediately below it, thus making only one wall for the heat to penetrate in passin from one container or saggar to the next In order to reach the contents to be burned, as against two walls or double thickness of walls with the ordinary saggars having four walls each instead of two, as in the present case.

In order to insure the proper fitting of each sa gar to the surrounding ones, so as to comp ete the four inclosing walls of each container when in use, I rovide interlocking ribs and grooves at t 1e corners of the walls 2 and 3. The outer ends of the walls 3 and 2 are formed with grooves 5 and 6, respectively, while the corner at the juncture of said walls has projecting ribs 7 and 8 adapted to fit the grooves 6 and 5, respectively, of the adjacent saggars.

The upper edges of the walls 2 and 3 are preferably provided with openings or notches 4 to allow free circular of hot air, but these notches or openings may be omitted. The size and thickness of the walls of the saggars may of course be varied to suit require-' ments of the different articles to be fired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States is 1. A container of the character described having walls at two sides made integral with its bottom, the other two sides being open to be closed b walls of another container placed beside t 1e first one.

2. A container of the character described having a bottom and two side walls meeting at one corner, said walls having interlocking ribs and grooves at the juncture of said walls and at their free ends for the purpose specified.
