invention, comprise a pair or similar members 10 having pinching jaws 11 at one end and vhandles 12at-the other end. the said members being pivotally connected at the portions 13 intermediate the said ends ina special manner to be described. The sa d intermediate portions 13 are circular 1n formation, having opposed faces 16 in-abut ment, and they are provided with radial recesses that cooperate to serve as cutting ]a,WS. A plurality of such recesses is shown, comprising lateral recesses 14 at each side and u axial recesses 25 that are located at the bases of the pinching jaws 11.

That is to say, the thickness of the pinching jaws 11 and the shank portions 15 correspond essentially tothe combined thickness of the overlapping portions 13. The features so far described are usual in pliers. l utilize the thickened shank portion 15 and the thickened pinching jaw portion 17 a s means for holding the members 10 pivotally connected, and this feature I believe to be new.

it \vill be noted'that the overlapping portions 13 comprise a cylindrical wall portion 18 adjacent the bearing faces 16 and exteriorly of the same there is a conical portion 19, comprising essentially a tapering or removal of the corner of the outer-endof the cylindrical portion 18. Of course, the relative proportions of the cylindrical portion 18 and the tapered portion 19 may be varied according to any degree desired, so long as a reduced portionlil is provided of appre ciable 'egitent. That is to say, for the tapered form shown for the reduced portion a different form may be provided than that shown.

An advantage that is possible with the incased joint shown and described and parthe pivotal pin is found in the modification shown in Fig. 3 and applied to the radial cutting jaws, such as the jaws provided in members 10" shown in the said figure. It will be noted that these jaws may be made of any depth desired, so long as the members 10" are not cut in two, the practical limit being to have the depth of the jaw forming recesses terminate at the pivotal axis, where the cutting movement willbe zero.
Of course, as the. depth of the jaw recesses 25 is increased the cutting movement will be reduced, the limit being zero, as mentioned, and as the cutting movement is reduced the cutting leverage. is increased, so that with a deep recess 25' a corresponding powerful cutting effect will be produced.
It will be noted that means are provided for pivotally connecting the members 10 that are integral with the said members, so that the complete tool may consist of simply two parts, the flange-like overhanging portion 20 serving to hold the members together. Any form of pinching, jaws may be provided, or these may be omitted altogether. Also, the pinching jaws may be omitted or these may be replaced by some form of cutting jaws.
I claim as my invention l 1. Pliers comprising a pair of mating members, the said members being similar and having overlapping portions of circular formation, said overlapping portions having their exterior portions reducedat the, edges, and the said members having each diametrally disposed and inwardly directed flanges engaged with the said exterior reduccd portion of the other of the said members.
