UNrrnn s'rA'rns PATENT onnion.
WILLIAM nnnnsr WALKER, or NEW-ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
ORTHODONTIA DEVICE FOR INFLUENCING THE ALVEOLAR PROCESS AND UNEMERGED TEETH.
Original application filed October 14, 1911, Serial To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ERNEST WVALKER, orthodontist, a citizen of the United State, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and Stateof Louisiana, and whose post-office addressis 629 Maison Blanche, in said city, have invented a certain new and useful Orthodontia Device for Influencing the Alveolar Process and Unemerged Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
This is a division of my co-pending application Serial No. 654,769.
The invention consists primarily in an improvement in the art of orthodontia, the purpose of which is to influence the alveolar process, by artificial means, during the emerging process, and thereby correct any tendency toward faulty development of the teeth and jaws; and the subject 'matter of this invention resides in a device whereby alight pressure simulating lip or tonguepressure is applied on the buccal, the. labial, or the lingual side of the jaw or gum where any deformity is to be remedied or arrested.
In using the expression alveolar process in this specification and the appended claims, I refer not merely to the alveolar process per se, but to the unemerged teeth or unemerged portions of the teeth contained therein, either separately or collectively.
In the accompanying drawing one embodiment of this invention is illustrated by way of example, according to which a device for the purpose stated is shown applied to the labial side of the upper jaw.
The purpose of the device selected for illustration is to develop artificially, a pressure, simulating lip pressure, and thereby exert an influence, through the gums, upon unemerged but wrongly disposed teeth, or
counteract the influence of the tongue in Y a patient predisposed to press the same against the gums, as frequently occurs in mouth-breathing. 7
It comprises essentially a suitable carrying member or bow 1 with any desirable Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
No. 654,769. Divided and this application filed February Serial No. 747,765.
form of anchorage 2, and a bearing plate 11,
or-plates, of relatively large area adapted to conform to the gum over the tooth or teeth to be influenced, and preferably having a cushioning facing 12, of suitable material, such for instance as sheet rubber. Loops 3 in the carrying member or other suitable 65 means adapt it to be adjusted to determine the pressure of the bearing plate at will. The plate illustrated is provided with a recess in its upper edge to accommodate the frenum. The principle herein disclosed is the alveolar arch, or either buccally or lingually against posterior parts of the arch.
The anchorage is the same as described in the parent case above referred to, and consists of a band 2 with sockets for receiving the bifurcated end 4: of the carrying member 1. This band is fastened over a tooth distantly situated from the bearing plate and it will preferably be duplicated at the opposite end of the jaw for receiving the other end of the carrying member.
It will be readily understood that on account of the carrying member being detachable from the anchorage, necessary adjustment can easily be done at the loops 3. Any
other suitable form of anchorage, for instance the form illustrated in my co-pending applications Serial No. 747 ,7 66 and Serial No. 747 ,7 67 may be used in connection with the present pressure device.
I' claim:
1. A device for influencing the alveolar process, said device comprising suitable anchorage, a carrying member supported from said anchorage and provided with a bearing plate constructed and located to communicate inward pressure on the jaw through the gum simulating lip pressure; said bearing plate carrying a padding through which it bears against the gum.
2. A device for influencing the alveolar process, said device comprising suitable anchorage, a carrying member supported from 'The foregoing specification signed at said anchorage and provided With a bearing Washington, D. 0., this 14th day of Septem- 10 plate constructed and located to communiber,- 1912. V V cate pressure on t e jaw t rough the gum V simulating lip or tongue pressure; said bear- WILLIAM R T WALKER ing plate carrying a padding through which In presence of two Witnesses: it bears against the gum; said bearing plate HERVEY S. KNIGHT,
being recessed to accommodate the frenum. EDWIN S. CLARK'SON.-
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five tents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
