Application filed February 16, 1914. Serial No. 818,945.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, ALBERT H. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburgh and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Bending Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe bending devices and particularly of that type which employs a fixed member against which the pipe is bent and a swinging lever carrying a roller which is forced along the pipe to behd the same against the fixed member.
The invention is embodied in a construction which includes means for bending pipes in various curves and novel means for clamping the pipe during the bending operation.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a pipe bending machine with a stationary or fixed member having a curved edge and a plurality of pipe grooves formed in the edge portion to receive pipes of different diameter.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a ,pipe bending device with a removable forming jaw, whereby the device may be adapted to bend a pipe in a small or in a large curve.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe bender with a pipe clamping member hinged to the bender to permit of the ready positioning of the pipe to be bent and the easy removal of the bent p With the above and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel and useful constructions, parts and combinations, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved pipe bending device, with the pipe shown clamped in position to be bent and the bending roller and operating lever shown in their initial positions. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, showing the detachable former jaw removed and the bending roller and its operating lever in their final positions. Fig. 3is an edge view looking in the direction of the arrow A in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view of the H of Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention 5 designates the fixed or stationary member, which is formed with a curved former edge 6, which is provided with pipe receiving grooves 7 and 8, either one of which may be larger or smaller than the other, the drawings showing the upper groove 7 as the smaller of the two. Only two grooves are shown, but it is understood that a greater number may be employed, and the principle of variation elaborated. The member 5 may be secured in any suitable manner to the usual work support or bench.
A detachable former jaw 9, having an innor concave surface 9 and an outer convex surface 9 is held against the curved edge 6 of the member 5, with the inner concave surpipe clamp, taken on line face 9' contacting with the face of said edge and covering the grooves 7 and 8, by means of the screws or fastening devices, indicated by the reference numeral 10. The detachable former jaw 9 is provided with an upper pipe receiving groove 11 and a lower pipe receiving groove 12, in a manner similar to that of the edge 6 of the member 5. By removing the screws 10 the detachable former jaw may be readily removed.
The pipe A is held in place against the forming edge by a clamping device which comprises a yoke 13, which is formed with a screw threaded bearing 13 and is provided with a hinge member 14, suitably fixed to its lower arm 13', and which is hingedly connected with the lower side of the member 5 or the detachable former jaw by a slip pin or other like means, to provide for the necessary adjustment when the detachable former jaw is removed or replaced. The upper arm 13" of the yoke 13 is provided with a latch finger 15 which is adapted to resiliently engage with the projection 16, on the detachable former jaw 9,, or with the projection 17 on the member 5. By lifting the latch finger 15 the yokemay be allowed to drop by gravity away from the former edge. A pipe clamping jaw member 17 is slidable between the arms 13' and 13" of the yoke 13, and a.
The pipe is bent against the jaw 9 or the edge 6 by means of a roller 19, which is formed with circumscribing grooves 19 and 19*, corresponding t0, the grooves 7 and 8, of ,the member 5 and the grooves 11 and 12 of the jaw 9 in width, approximately. The roller 19 is pivoted between the upper arm 20 and the lower arm 20 of the lever 20, which is provided with an extended handle 20, whereby the body of the operator may be placed against the lever and his maximum force exerted. The roller 19 has a bearing against the edge face of the former'9, which tends to protect the lever against undue strain, and causes'a positive rotation of the said roller, so that a more efiicient formingaction results. The inner ends of the lever arms 20 and 20 are pivotally held in place on the member 5 by the pivot pin 21, which is extended through said member, said arms being movable against the upper and lower faces, or adjacent to said upper and lower faces, of said member 5. In order to readjust the lever when the detachable jaw 9 is removed two openings are provided in each of the-arms of the lever for the pivot pin 21, the space between said openings being substantially equal to the width of the detachablejaw 9. When this jaw 9 is removed the pivot pinis passed through the innermost opening.
My improved bending device enables an ordinary intelligent person to bend pipe for gas or electric wiring purposes, without kinking the pipe. After the pipe has been bent it is not necessar to unscrew the screw,
as the clamping jaw 1 may be released from clamping position by lifting the latch finger 15, when the yoke and the screw, carrying the clamping jaw, will drop by gravity away from clamping position. I
The improved bender is exceedingly simple in construction and in operation and is constructed to give efiieient service for an indefinite period of time.
Having described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A pipe bender consisting of a stationary member, a lever having arms straddling the member and pivoted thereto, said member having a curved edge and provided with grooves in said curved edge of different area and designed to receive pipe, means for adjusting said arms on the member, a roller pivoted between and to said arms and formed with ,circumscribing grooves corresponding to the grooves of the member and having direct engagement with the curved edge, a detachable jaw secured to the member and adapted to cover said grooves in said edge and provided with pipe receiving grooves of different area, and means for clamping the pipe to be bent, said jaw being detachable from the curved edge and said lever being adjustable on said stationary member to bring the roller into bending position against said curved edge, the adjustment of the lever arms being such as to permit of a swinging action of the lever in either position to bend the pipe against either the curved edge or detachable jaw, said jaw being curved.
