ATTACHMENT FOR DENTAL DEPRESSION-CUPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 117, 1914.
Application filed March 23, 1814. Serial No. 826,650.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W'ALTER J. THUR- MOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Dental Impression- Cups; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates broadly to improvements in dental appliances and more particularly to devices for preventing any excess plaster or other impression material from falling from a dental impression cup into the mouth of the patient.
The main object of the invention is to construct a device of this character in such a manner as to render the same readily applicable to most forms of dental impression cups and to construct the device in the most simple manner consistent with its proper operation.
With the above object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a dental impression cup showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 83 of Fig. 2; and Fig. i is a detail perspective view of the attachment removed from the cup.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my invention as applied to a dental impression cup 1 which is of common for mation having the usual upstanding flange 2 and also having its central portion bulged upwardly as shown at 3. It will be noted that the forward edge of the cup is not provided with any flange or other means for preventing the paste within the cap from flowing over said end when the cup is in use within a patients mouth. lVith. the form of cup so far described, when the same is forced upwardly against the roof of the mouth for the sake of obtaining an impression in the plaster, the latter is prone to flow over said forward edge of the cup and upon the tongue of the patient. This usually has a severely nauseating effect and is of course an undesirable feature of the impression cup of the character so far de scribed.
In order to prevent any excess plaster from falling from the cup onto the tongue of the patient, I provide my improved attachmcnt i which is in the form of a metal plate 5 which may be of any suitable size and configuration provided it be of such shape as to fit closely beneath the cup 1 which may be of any size to perform its functions. The forward corners of the plate 5 are provided with integral attaching hooks 6 which are formed by providing said corners with tongues and bending said tongues upwardly and rearwardly sons to properly position them for engagement with the forward edge of the cup 1. The plate 5 is here shown as of considerably greater width at its forward end than at its rear end, said rear end being provided with an integral handle 7 for coaction with the handle lof the cup 1,themetal,forward-of the handle being bulged downwardly as at 8 so that a pocket or receptacle 9 is formed between the upwardly bulged portion 3 of the cup 1 and the downwardly bulged portion 8 of the plate 5. The forward edge of the plate 5 is provided with an upstanding flange 10 which as shown, is spaced a considerable distance from the inwardly curved forward edge of the cup 1 and thereby a suitable space is provided for allowing the excess plaster or other impression material passing over the edge of said cup, to enter the receptacle 9 and be supported upon the downwardly bulged portion 8 0f the plate In order to prevent the upper edge of the flange 10 from lacerating the roof of the patients mouth, I provide said flange with a continuous head 11 along said upper edge.
For the purpose of preventing the handle 1 from shifting laterallv. I provide the op posite edges of said handle with upstanding cars 12, said ears contacting with the opposite edges of the handle 1. By this arrangement of parts, it will be seen that the atta chment 4 is prevented from moving forwardly to such an extent as to disengage its hooks 6 from the forward edge of the cup 1. lVhen however, it is necessary to remove said attachment. the handle 1 may be moved downwardly whereupon the cars 12 will be free to move forwardly, thus allowing the entire receptacle to be removed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have produced a very simple yet effective attachment for dental impression cups which will positively prevent the excess plaster or other'iinpression material, from falling onto the back of the patients tongue thereby preventingaccidents or any injurious or unpleasant effects upon the patient.
By the use of my improved device, the dentist can place the head of the patient as far back as is necessary or in any desired position, assuring the patient that there will be no waste material to fall from the cup and produce disagreeable eflects. More satisfactory impressions for plates and other artificial dentures may therefore be made.
Although I have described my invention with considerable minuteness, I do not wish to be limited to details, proportioning of parts or character of materials, otherwise than as specified in theappended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a dental impression cup open at its forward end, of a plate underlying said cup and having its body portion bulged downwardly from a point beneath the rear portion of said cup to its forward edge, an upright-flange rising from said forward edge and spaced from the open end of the cup, hooks formed on said forwardedge ofthe plate atthe opposite ends of said flange and engaging said open end of the impression cup and a handle extending rearwardly from said plate andunderlying the handle of the impression cup.
2. The combination with a dental impression cup open at its forward end and having a rearwardly extending handle, of a receptacle beneath said cup, said receptacle comprising a metal plate having its central portion :bulged downwardly, an upright flange rising from the forward end of said plate and spaced from the open end of the cup, a pair of integral attaching hooks on the front end of said plate and located at each end of the flange, the rear end of said plate being reduced in width and continued rearwardly to form a handle for coaction with the handle of said cup, and upstanding ears on the opposite edges of the'handle of the receptacle, said ears embracing the handle of the cup.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of-two subscribing witnesses.
