ORTHODONTIA-PLLERS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, llflA'rrHnw N. FEDER- srinn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lvlilwaulee, in the county of Mil wanliee and State of wlllisconsin, have invented a new andV usel'ul Improvement in `rthodontia-lliers, of which the following is a specilication.
'll/.ly invention relates te certain new and 'useiul improvements in orthodontia pliers, and is tnlly described and explained in the sjgiecilication and shown in the accompanyirre,I drawing, in whichll'igure l is a side elevation of iny iniproved device, one liurcation of the bi'lini cated aw being` broken away; Fig. 2 is an elevation looking from the lett oi.E Fig. l.; litigi'. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l with the jaws open; lfig. l is a section on the line l of 2, and Fig. 5 is an elevation et the work done by the device.
teilerring to the drawings, G and 7 are two jaws adapted to oppose each other and nmtually pivoted so as to be opened and closed by the handles provided as in any ordinary pair of pliers. The aw G is provided with a projecting rib composed el several parts 8, 9, l0, ll and l2, oli gradwilly decreasing width in the plane of the jaw and the port l2 being lower than the parts 8 and 11, inclusive, as shown in Figs. l. and 'lhe jaw is bilrlrcated to straddle the rib on the jaw G, the space between its :liurcations being' inade progressively narrower troni the end toward the pivot, so that when the jaws are closed together, each part of the iurcations is spaced at substantially an equal distance from the adjacent part oit' the rib.
rlhe several parts of the rib on the jaw G are provided with notches 13 to engage and center the wire which to be nsed.
rlhe operation oli the device will be readily apparent. A piece of wire of the sort connnonly employed in Orthodontie work is placed across that part of the rib of the proper width to furnish the desired interior spacing` in the bend te be made. The jaws are then brciiight together and the wire is not only bent into the loop torni, but the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 2, 1914.

parts adjacent te the loop are engaged between the plane surfaces of the jaws so as to turn theni out into a perteetlystraight line. lt is thus possible to make bends et live ditierent sizes, as illustrated, and in each case the bends are perfectly proportioned and the original straight line of the wire is maintained.
l realize that considerable variation is possible in the details ol the construction. heroin shown, and l do not intend to liniit niyself thereto, except pointed out in the following clainis, in which it is niy intention te claini all the novelty inherent in the device as broadly is permitted by the state ot the art.
l claini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentll. A device oit the class described co1nprisingtwo opposing plane jaws, a rib pio jectine1 troni one jaw and consisting olib a series ol separate parts of dill'erent widths, the other jaw being bilurcated to straddle the rib and having the space between its furcations oil various widths corresponding te the width ot the rib parts.
2. Orthodontia pliers having opposing plane awe, a rib on one aw consisting of a series oi parts (lilies-inn, in width. and height, the other jaw beingl bilinrcated to straddle the rib and hai/ing the space be tween its furcations oit diliferent widths correspond in p; to the dillerent rib parts, ior the purpose set lorth.
3. it device et the class described. co1nprising two opposing plane jaws, a rib pro jeeting;` trein one jaw and consisting of a series oi? separate parts of dili'erent widths, the other jaw being),` bifnrcatcd to straddle the rib and having the space between its iiiufcations et various widths corresponding to the width of the rib parts, the said rib parts being' provided with notches to hold the niaterial ope ated upon.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto set .my hand this th day oit June, 191%.
