Abstract
An orthodontic appliance (110,400), a system (100) and a method are provided for automatic tooth straightening. The appliance (110,400) may be fabricated manually or by stereolithography using a computer program (106) that formulates a three-dimensional digital model (107). The appliance (110,400) or series of appliances (110,400) may be made to fit a particular patient wherein a portion of the appliance (110,400) may be attached to fully erupted teeth (306) that are substantially straight. The appliance (110,400) may fit onto the teeth (306) that do not require straightening using a section (402) made from a relatively stiff material so that the appliance (110,400) remains in the mouth in a relative constant position. The erupted teeth (302) that require straightening may be straightened with an area (404) of the appliance (110,400) formed of a softer, more resilient material so that fewer appliances may be required than if a stiffer material were used. The unerrupted teeth (304) may be guided into the mouth by another portion (406) of the appliance (110,400) that is performed with predicted sizes and shapes of teeth determined from anatomical standards. The appliance (110,400) may be formed of a hard stiffer inner shell (502) overlaid by a soft outer layer (501).
Claims (32)
1. A generally U-shaped orthodontic appliance worn on teeth in a mouth of a patient wherein at least one of the teeth require correcting and further wherein the orthodontic appliance has a plurality of layers of material, the orthodontic appliance comprising:
a first layer constructed from a first material;
a second layer adjacent to the first layer constructed from a second material wherein the second material is harder than the first material; and a first socket formed within the first layer wherein the socket causes movement of a position of at least one of the teeth.

2. The orthodontic appliance of Claim 1 further comprising:
a second socket formed within the first layer wherein the second socket maintains the position of at least one of the teeth.

3. The orthodontic appliance of Claim 1 further comprising:
walls extending from the first layer.

4. The orthodontic appliance of Claim 1 wherein the first socket is shaped to correspond to at least one of the teeth.
5. The orthodontic appliance of Claim 1 further comprising:
walls extending from the second layer.

6. A method for correcting a position of a tooth in a mouth of a patient having teeth wherein one of the teeth has a correct position and one of the teeth has an incorrect position wherein the patient has a plurality of types of teeth wherein one of the types of the teeth is erupted teeth, the method comprising the steps of:
identifying the position of the tooth;
creating an image from the position of the tooth;
and predicting a size of an unerupted tooth based on a size of an erupted tooth of the patient.

7. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
determining the correct position of one of the teeth having the incorrect position based on a model of the tooth wherein the model represents the correct position of the tooth.

8. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
fabricating an appliance based on the correct position of the tooth.

9. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
creating a dental appliance having a first portion which contacts a first tooth having the incorrect position wherein the first portion is shaped based on the correct position of the tooth and wherein the dental appliance has a second portion which contacts a second tooth having a correct position.
creating a dental appliance having a first portion which contacts a first tooth having the incorrect position wherein the first portion is shaped based on the correct position of the tooth and wherein the dental appliance has a second portion which contacts a second tooth having a correct position.
10. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
scanning the teeth of the patient to create the image of the position of the tooth.

11. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
photographing the teeth of the patient to create the image of the position of the tooth.

12. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
radio-graphing the teeth of the patient to create the image of the position of the tooth.

13. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
basing the prediction of the size of the unerupted tooth on race-based anatomical standards for teeth.

14. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
basing the prediction of the size of the unerupted tooth on mesio-distal standards for teeth.

15. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of:
predicting a shape of the unerupted tooth based on standard shapes for teeth.

16. An orthodontic appliance for teeth of a patient having either a correct position or an incorrect position in the mouth of the patient, the appliance comprising:
a base sized to fit the teeth of the patient;
a first slot in the base having a first occlusal surface wherein the first slot is constructed from a first material; and a second slot in the base having a second occlusal surface wherein the second slot is constructed from a second material and further wherein the first material is harder than the second material and wherein the second slot guides one of the teeth having the incorrect position into the correct position.

17. The appliance of Claim 16 further comprising:
a socket within the base wherein the socket is shaped in correlation to individual teeth of the user.

18. The appliance of Claim 16 further comprising:
a socket within the base wherein the socket is sized to receive two or more teeth of the user.

19. The appliance of Claim 16 wherein the first material is adjacent to teeth to be maintained.
20. The appliance of Claim 16 wherein the second material is adjacent to teeth requiring correction.
21. The appliance of Claim 16 wherein the occlusal surface is flat.
22. A method for adjusting teeth of a patient, the method comprising the steps of:
identifying an orthodontic condition of the teeth of the patient;
estimating a position of the teeth wherein the position is a correct position in the mouth of the patient and further wherein the correct position provides a proper occlusion of the teeth of the patient; and creating a dental appliance having a socket to rotate the teeth of the patient into the correct position wherein the socket is based on a predicted size of a tooth which has not erupted.
identifying an orthodontic condition of the teeth of the patient;
estimating a position of the teeth wherein the position is a correct position in the mouth of the patient and further wherein the correct position provides a proper occlusion of the teeth of the patient; and creating a dental appliance having a socket to rotate the teeth of the patient into the correct position wherein the socket is based on a predicted size of a tooth which has not erupted.
23. The method of Claim 22 further comprising the step of:
creating a model of the teeth of the patient.

24. The method of Claim 22 further comprising the step of:
providing a second socket in the dental appliance wherein the second socket maintains a position of a tooth having the correct position.

25. The method of Claim 22 further comprising the step of:
obtaining an image of the teeth of the patient.

26. The method of Claim 22 further comprising the step of:
calculating a distance between the position of the tooth and the correct position for the tooth.

27. The method of Claim 22 further comprising the step of:
creating a retainer shaped to receive the teeth of the patient when the teeth are in the correct position.

28. A system for adjusting teeth of a patient, the system comprising:
an image capturing device which obtains an image of the teeth of the patient wherein at least one of the teeth has an incorrect position; and a central processing unit which receives the image of the teeth from the image capturing device wherein the central processing unit estimates a correct position of the teeth and further wherein the central processing unit determines a shape of a first dental appliance worn adjacent to the teeth based on the correct position of the tooth.
an image capturing device which obtains an image of the teeth of the patient wherein at least one of the teeth has an incorrect position; and a central processing unit which receives the image of the teeth from the image capturing device wherein the central processing unit estimates a correct position of the teeth and further wherein the central processing unit determines a shape of a first dental appliance worn adjacent to the teeth based on the correct position of the tooth.
29. The system of Claim 28 wherein the central processing unit determines a shape of a second dental appliance worn adjacent to the teeth after the first dental appliance is worn wherein the second dental appliance maintains the tooth in the correct position.
30. A generally U-shaped orthodontic appliance for teeth of a patient having either a correct position or an incorrect position in the mouth of the patient wherein a predicted position is a correction of the incorrect position in the mouth, the orthodontic appliance comprising:
a base sized to fit the teeth of the patient wherein the base is constructed from a single material; and a first socket in the base to receive one of the teeth in the incorrect position and further wherein the first socket causes movement of one of the teeth in the incorrect position to the predicted position.

31. The orthodontic appliance of Claim 30 further comprising:
a second socket in the base to receive one of the teeth in the correct position.

32. The orthodontic appliance of Claim 30 wherein the first socket is shaped to correspond to a plurality of the teeth in the incorrect position.
