Abstract
A set of customized orthodontic brackets (14) are provided with slots (22) that are arranged substantially parallel to the tooth surface. The archwire (10), in an as-manufactured condition, has a portion of substantial arcuate extent, which is canted relative to the occlusal plane (15). The brackets (1 4) are designed on a computer as a combination of three-dimensional virtual objects comprising the virtual bracket bonding pad (18) and a separate virtu al bracket body retrieved from a library of virtual bracket bodies. The virtual brackets can be represented as a file containing digital shape data and exported to a rapid prototype fabrication device for fabrication of the bracket (14) in wax or other material and casting the wax prototype in a suitable alloy. Other manufacturing techniques are also contemplated, including milling and laser sintering.
Claims (19)
1. A method of designing and manufacturing a customized orthodontic bracket (14), the method including the step of storing a digital representation of portions of a patient's dentition in a computer, and accessing a library of virtual three-dimensional bracket bodies in said computer, the method being characterized by the steps of:
a) determining the shape and configuration of a bracket bonding pad (18), said bracket bonding pad (18) having a tooth-facing surface (24) substantially conforming to an exact shape of corresponding three-dimensional surfaces (54) of a tooth (16) of the patient;
b) combining a bracket body (20) from said library of bracket bodies (20) with said bracket bonding pad (18) to thereby create an individual, customized virtual orthodontic bracket; and c) exporting digital data representing said customized virtual orthodontic bracket from said computer to a manufacturing system for manufacturing said customized orthodontic bracket (14).
a) determining the shape and configuration of a bracket bonding pad (18), said bracket bonding pad (18) having a tooth-facing surface (24) substantially conforming to an exact shape of corresponding three-dimensional surfaces (54) of a tooth (16) of the patient;
b) combining a bracket body (20) from said library of bracket bodies (20) with said bracket bonding pad (18) to thereby create an individual, customized virtual orthodontic bracket; and c) exporting digital data representing said customized virtual orthodontic bracket from said computer to a manufacturing system for manufacturing said customized orthodontic bracket (14).
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining the shape and configuration of a bracket bonding pad (18) includes the step of creating a virtual copy of the exact shape of the corresponding three-dimensional surfaces (54) of the tooth (16) to define the shape and configuration of the bracket bonding pad (18).
3. The method of claim 1 or 2, wherein each of the bracket bonding pad (18) and the bracket body (20) comprises a separate and independent three-dimensional virtual object moveable relative to each other combinable to form a single virtual three-dimensional object representing a bracket (14).
4. The method of claim 3, wherein said bracket body (20) comprises a feature forming a slot (22) for receiving an archwire (10), and wherein said slot (22) is oriented approximately parallel to said bracket bonding pad (18) in the location of where said bracket body (2) is combined with said bracket bonding pad (18).
5. The method of claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein said banding pad (18) further comprises an opposite surface (26) positioned opposite from the tooth-facing surface (24) and also having a three-dimensional shape substantially conforming to the three-dimensional tooth facing surfaces (54).
6. The method of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, wherein steps a) and b) include using computer software to provide a user access to a three-dimensional virtual model of the patient's dentition, and the method further comprises the steps of combining a virtual bracket bonding pad (18) object and a bracket body (20) object with a virtual tooth (16) and subtracting portions of the virtual bracket bonding pad (18) and the bracket body (20) object projecting into the virtual tooth (16) to thereby substantially conform the tooth facing surface (24) of the virtual bracket bonding pad (18) to the virtual tooth (16).

The method of claim 6, further comprising the steps of viewing a plurality of virtual teeth (16) each having a combined virtual bracket bonding pad (18)-virtual bracket body (20) positioned thereon, and shifting a location of at least one virtual bracket body (20) relative to the respective bracket bonding pad (18) associated therewith to thereby reduce risk of a conflict between the at least one virtual bracket body and an adjacent or opposing tooth (16).
8. The method of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7, further comprising modifying the digital representation of the dentition on a computer into a desired finish position, and wherein steps a) and b) are performed after said teeth are virtually moved to said desired finish position.
9. The method of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, , 7, or 8, further comprising the step of making a physical model of the teeth of the patient, manipulating the physical model to place the teeth into a desired occlusion, scanning the physical model of the teeth in the desired occlusion, and wherein said digital representation comprises a three-dimensional representation derived from said scanning.
10. The method of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, wherein said manufacturing system comprises a rapid prototyping system to manufacture a representation of said bracket (14) to be used as a positive pattern, and wherein the method further comprises the step of casting said customized orthodontic bracket (14).
11. The method of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, further comprising fabricating said bracket (14) using a laser sintering process.
12. A set of brackets (14) for a patient manufactured according to the method of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11, and wherein each of said set of brackets (14) has a different shape and configuration of the bracket bonding pad (18) corresponding to a different tooth (16) of the patient.
13. A bracket (14) for a patient, said customized bracket (14) comprising a bonding pad (18) to bond a bracket body (20) to the tooth of the patient with adhesive and a slot (22) associated with the bracket body (20) for receiving an archwire (10) and being characterized by:
said bracket bonding pad (18) comprising a customized three-dimensional tooth-facing surface (24) substantially conforming to an exact shape of corresponding three dimensional surfaces of the tooth (16) of the patient to thereby significantly reduce need build up of adhesive and yet enhance strength of the bond between the customized three dimensional tooth-facing surface (24) and the corresponding three-dimensional surface of the tooth (15) and to reduce thickness of at least the combination of the adhesive ~ said bracket bonding pad (18) when the three-dimensional tooth-facing surface ~
said bracket bonding pad (18) is bonded to the corresponding three-dimensional surfaces (54) of the tooth ( 16) with the adhesive material.
said bracket bonding pad (18) comprising a customized three-dimensional tooth-facing surface (24) substantially conforming to an exact shape of corresponding three dimensional surfaces of the tooth (16) of the patient to thereby significantly reduce need build up of adhesive and yet enhance strength of the bond between the customized three dimensional tooth-facing surface (24) and the corresponding three-dimensional surface of the tooth (15) and to reduce thickness of at least the combination of the adhesive ~ said bracket bonding pad (18) when the three-dimensional tooth-facing surface ~
said bracket bonding pad (18) is bonded to the corresponding three-dimensional surfaces (54) of the tooth ( 16) with the adhesive material.
14. The bracket of claim 13, wherein said bracket (14) comprises a lingual bracket, and wherein said slot (22) of said bracket (14) is oriented in approximate parallel alignment relative to the bracket bonding pad (18) in a location where said bracket body (20) is combined with said bracket bonding pad (18) to thereby further decrease thickness of the bracket (14).
15. The bracket of claim 13 or 14, wherein the tooth (16) has a cusp, and wherein the bracket bonding pad (18) covers a portion of the cusp.
16. The bracket of claim 12, 13, 14, or 15, wherein said bracket bonding pad (18) includes a size and shape such that said bracket bonding pad (18) is adapted to be positioned manually in a predetermined position on the tooth (16) without use of a bracket placement device.
17. The bracket of claim 13, 14, 15, or 16, wherein said tooth-facing surface (24) covers at least 50 percent of the lingual or labial surface of the tooth (16) to which it is to be bonded.
18. The bracket of claim 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17, wherein said bracket bonding pad (18) further comprise an opposite surface (26) positioned opposite from said tooth-facing surface (24), wherein said bracket bonding pad (18) has a thickness less than 0.3 mm, and wherein said bracket bonding pad (18) adheres to the lingual or labial surface of the tooth (16) without a buildup of adhesive.
19. The bracket of claim 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, or 18, wherein the slot (22) is adapted to receive the archwire (10) such that a major axis (11) of the archwire (10) is oriented in a canted position relative to an occlusal plane (15).
