'What's in their right ear?' MasterChef Australia fans are left baffled by the judges wearing earpieces during pre-recorded episode

Monday night's episode of MasterChef Australia saw the amateur chefs travel to South Australia and reconstruct a truly difficult dessert.

But during the critique of their desserts, some fans were more baffled as to why the judges were wearing earpieces during the pre-recorded episode.

Seated at a large dinner table, George and fellow judge Gary Mehigan drew attention to a small audio-type device in their right ear while discussing how to rate their dishes.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Network Ten for comment.

During the episode, contestants were taken to the space-age Cube Restaurant in McLaren Vale and faced with recreating an innovative 'pie' by chef Brendan Wessels.

There were audible gasps from the cooks as the 'lemon meringue pie,' which was partly made on a 3D printer and looked more like a Lego creation, was unveiled.

The shocked contestants were told by chef Brendan that the dessert contained: 'Lemon curd parfait balls, and lemon curd gel on the side. Then we have the nitro fennel balls.'

He added: 'And coconut rocher, and then we have a meringue sheet that sits on the top. On the base, with the 3D printer, we have the caramelised white chocolates.'

Judge George Calombaris told the stunned cooks: 'Today you'll be using a 3D food printer. There's no other restaurant in Australia that has one. And only a handful of chefs that have ever used one.'
