Uber could be BANNED as MPs lobby transport bosses to withdraw licence over rape and tax claims
A cross-party group of MPs called for Transport for London to cancel Uber's taxi licence
UBER could be banned from operating in London after a group of MPs called for the firm to lose its taxi licence.
The ride-sharing firm has gained huge popularity across Britain by undercutting black cabs on price.
But now a cross-party gang of politicians is lobbying the travel watchdog to ban the company from the capital.
The MPs claimed Uber is endangering the public, pointing to claims that the firm's drivers carry out a sexual assault every 11 days.
They also argued that the company mistreats its workers, paying them as little as £2 per hour.
And they slammed Uber for not paying VAT on its rides, allegedly escaping £40million in taxes.
Ilford North MP Wes Streeting sent a letter to the head of Transport for London calling for a crackdown on Uber.
He said: "The safety of Londoners must be at the forefront of decisions taken about the taxi and private hire industry in our capital city.
"We do not believe that Uber has shown itself to be a fit and proper operator."
The letter was also signed by seven other Labour MPs, two Tories and a Lib Dem.
Uber's taxi licence is London, first awarded in 2012, is set to expire this month.
Black cab drivers have lobbied furiously to deny the US-based company a new licence, claiming it is endangering the public.
If Uber is banned from London - by far its largest UK market - it could be forced out of other British cities too.
A spokesman for the firm told The Sun: "3.5million Londoners use Uber to get a reliable ride in the capital.
"More than 40,000 drivers rely on our app to make a living, with average fares last year of £15 an hour after our service fee.
"Drivers who use Uber are licensed by Transport for London and have been through the same enhanced background checks as black cab drivers."
The company has 75 taxi licences across various parts of the UK.
It has come under fire across the world for allegedly dodging taxes by classifying its drivers as self-employed, and fostering a macho atmosphere at its head office.
